Crocodiles and Seals (overcoming fear)

by Richard Lloyd Cederberg — Read all 280 poems by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

There are many types in modern society. In this piece, I use Crocodiles to symbolize those who hate, those who purpose to kill what's good in you, steal what you have, or destroy what you've accomplished. These types are usually quite blatant and easy to recognize. Then there're those lovable Seals, the ones who can fool anyone. The ones who don’t care about anything but themselves. Slick deceivers who use, schmooze, flatter, and mislead, to gain your trust, so they can facilitate their own plans.

Poem Artwork
Clutching simple notions
when at first this all began,
in hopes of being more in life
I turned another man,
dissembling everything around,
those theories preconceived,
passed to me from experts,
those who struggle to believe
.
Avoiding all resentments,
the kind’s my parents had,
I wanted something grander
to facilitate my plan,
embracing everything in sight,
those glimmering ideals,
I found myself adrift alone
with crocodiles and seals
.
At first the seals were welcoming
while nibbling on my hand,
a friendly way of getting near
to conjugate their plan,
little did I know that day
the chaos they would wreak,
when a seal connived a crocodile
to chew upon my cheek
.
I watched in abject horror
as the crocodile swam near
my friendly little lump of flesh
betrayed me now I feared
for all their cute and token smiles
and all those barks of hope
I discovered its deceitful plan
was cowardly in scope
.
At once I saw the irony
of what this life could bring
and how the seals and crocodiles
could gnaw and smash and sting,
allowing for how scared I was
I grinned and clenched my teeth
as the bloodshot eyes of crocodile
assessed my tasty meat
.
Crying out courageously
I rejected this demise
and spit upon its ugly head
between its beady eyes
for all the dread this moment brought
I realized one thing
that nothing could deter my call
or blessings I would bring
.
Above the skies got indistinct
and thunder rumbled deeply,
apparently my fervent prayer
had shifted things completely
straight away the croc turned tail
with seal in equal dread
it seemed my blatant bravery
had rendered fear quite dead….

No braver soldier than the one who prays, knowing they own the capacity with God, to make all fear melt away as easily as rain drops, your poetry is strong and beautiful, full of Faith and vision. Above all, Trust :)

Interesting how you would come up with this aquatic allegory while in a far inland historic location. I checked on the website and found the location beautiful except for the obvious drought conditions in midsummer that hopefully have been alleviated this year with all the rain and snow. It reminded me of Cooper's Rock and the old forge on Cheat Canyon, only 3 miles from my West Virginia home for a brief three years.

But I think you are writing about the entertainment industry where as a young artist you tried to navigate the friends who were deceivers and the manipulators and sharks that tried to take everything from your artistry and then spit you out as they begin to gobble up younger talent. As I watched the movie, Elvis, recently, it is no wonder that he and so many others retreated into drugs to try to please so many masters, most of them seals and crocodiles.

Shoot it from the hip brother !
I've come to realize the more I encounter ones as you described I can either shine bright light and forgiveness upon them greater than ever that ticks them off or my discernment moves me to pray for their awareness to change before it's too late for them.... It happens far too much greater for people such as ourselves because it is the price of prophetic calling we are called for... The beautiful gift of this " self mirror in realizations" through others is for me to understand what it is that I must clean my spiritual heart worthy of God's heart. May we continue to have STRENGTH and COURAGE like lions through the power of discernment !

Quite a tight, well-constructed poem, with compelling rhythm and rhyme, making an important point about all those false deceivers that we have to do with day by day in today's world.
