Rest...

Portrayal 10. The struggle with pessimism and depression. Destructive forces are at work in the cities and across the land; threats and lies never leave its streets. She told him, ‘Oh that we had the wings of doves, we would fly away and be at rest.’

Poem Artwork
Bowed by the
weight of
circumstance,
she grips what remains,
and gazes down impassively,
the pain of struggling in her face,
and on her back the burden of loss...
.
And from her
parched cracking lips
wearied prayers are offered,
daily rolled-as-dice blurred words,
being little more than gravelly whispers,
pleading earnestly (amidst a dry mosaic of
stones and dusty furrows) for clement rains
to reanimate the skeletal fields, she once
dreamt would be their Eden...
.
Even so, they court the earth,
in languishing rhythms, scraping,
scratching, turning, folding, speaking to it,
loving it, hating it, as calmness slowly wanes...
.
Snared in dark
seasons of thought,
they often curse their lot –
in cleaving discontent – each
day weathered hands doggedly
bearing the burthen of family misfortune,
where dreams sift through calloused fingers,
and on quicksilver breezes, settle in places where
all such things unrequited finally find rest...

This series will also address certain of the actors, artists, musicians, and writers I worked with in college, or professionally, all of which were influential (in one way or another) in shaping the man I am today. A MOST ADMIRABLE WORK, RICHARD! TOUCHING THE VERY FIBRE OF PERSEVERANCE AND SURVIVAL! CERTAINLY, YOU HAVE ENVELOPED MR. DUPRE'S INSPIRING CREATION...WITH A CREDENCE OF ENDURANCE AND BENEFICENCE THAT ONLY YOU COULD. I DARE TO THINK THAT IT WAS WAITING FOR YOUR...VOICE...ALL THESE YEARS(SMILE). BRAVO FOR THIS KEEPER! I was going to say ‘profound,’ but see John had that one first. So, I’ll offer another: ‘penetrating.’ Your words gave even more juice and life than the exquisite painting you chose. This is the best I’ve seen of yours. It breathes. ~~ djl

A profoundly moving tribute to those hard-working, hard-suffering souls living on and off of the earth. Fine work here.

As I read and saw the classic portrait, I felt you were writing about a farming family scraping out an income on evermore infertile soil. But I may be wrong.

I'm very interested in seeing more of these vignettes from your twenties, thirties and forties.

Your a futuristic evolved man Richard with great impassioned works in broad brush detail. It gave me scenes of my own father how he struggled in the Great Depression in 1929 as a small boy with his family. He quit school at age 9 to sell newspapers to feed and provide for Granny, Grand Pa and two other siblings. He recalls his hunger many days with nothing to eat. Gave me visions of the movie with Henry Fonda " Grapes Of Wrath". I was fortunate not to come from that kind of poverty but I do believe poverty teaches us humility in mind, body and soul. And then you learn the greatest treasures in life are of the spirit of the heart

Richard, you've penned a dedication of sorts to so much of our planet that struggles with the focus of this articulate and insightful poem. The painting is much value here in complimenting the metaphoric nature of the internal mind and heartaches that suffer with the physical struggle of basic essentials. "...dreams sift through calloused fingers..." indeed. And, as your summary suggests, the toll such struggles take are not limited to the outward obviousness of physical labor, but the incessant damage that occurs internally. Fine writing... as usual Richard. Thank you for posting.
