I lay in bed trying to sleep but could only toss and turn.
Would Santa visit me this year? This was my main concern.
I tried to do what Mamma said and be a good boy all year
But somehow, I wasn’t sure I had. That was my greatest fear.
I wanted a new bike for Christmas but what Santa were watching
The time I punched Tommy in the nose?
What is he saw me the day I snuck up on Sally
And pulled her hair or the time I stepped on Judy’s toes.
I fear Santa may simply pass over my house tonight.
If he saw the times I was bad he just might.
How can I say I’m sorry in time for Santa is already on his way?
I suppose these are questions I should have asked long before today.
I can only hope he can forgive me and remember the things I did that were kind.
I must admit that at this moment, not one time comes to mind.
So I toss and I turn and I punish myself for my nasty deeds.
Each of them comes back on me and for each one my heart bleeds.
I have advice for all you kids out there. Be kind the whole year through.
Then you won’t worry whether Santa will yell, Merry Christmas to you.
Cool poem, Lew. Neat the way you develop the idea that we do punish ourselves far worse than anyone else ever could :-)
