This poem originally was not supposed to be about me, but about those who set too high a standard for their relationships and end up losing what little relationships they have. Finally, when they stop searching so hard, what they were seeking comes eventually. In the end, I guess the poem is about me.

 Heart Hunting

I went hunting for a heart,
but didn't know where to start.
Everywhere I turned,
I was spurned.

It seemed the world was heartless,
cold and full of lies,
filled with cunning cutthroats,
and those that I despised.

I set my standards high,
so sure to attain my goal,
I passed by many an opportunity,
while I didn't live up to my role.

The years went by and hearts came by,
but they never lingered, flew.
Like birds startled from a branch,
they left… Why, I never knew.

And then my search came to an end,
futility had turned sour every try.
I gave up searching for a heart,
and gave up wondering, why?

When years then passed,
free from heart hunting at last,
I took care of me and my.

Gently they came out of the blue,
hearts so kind, and oh, so true .
They cared for me with unyielding love,
they cared for me, hovering above.

They were not angels, but true hearts,
they learned how to help me,
with fits and starts.

We didn't always see eye to eye,
but grew in affection, as time went by.
You'll never know,
when a good heart you'll find,
with ties of strength, with ties that bind.

I think that the philosophy that you share through your verses here makes a lot of sense and it is based on your personal experiences so all that more meaningful. Also, I can relate to this. Love and peace,

What a beautiful write, Ron. And look below at all the wonderful things people have to say about this piece. And they say them because the thoughts are heartfelt--from the soul. In my opinion, this is one of your best. It just really struck a chord with me.

Beautiful! There is always such a lovely flow to your writes; really smooth! An open heart is essential to happiness, although it can be risky, the results are usually pleasantly surprising!

With respect and admiration for the heart in this piece.

I think the generation that is marrying now may be getting back to long-term marriages, probably because they aren't marrying as young. This was a surprise coming from you. Very good.

When I first saw the crosshairs I thought this might be a story about a vicious serial killer or a craved necrophiliac. Then I saw it was just Ron Hull, a mild-mannered serial killer and a jovial necrophiliac. What a relief! Nice sniper scope. Happy heart hunting. :-)

Ron, Some hearts come and go and some hearts stay....but, the one I love is the one you don't have to ask for they know they are needed and stay on their own.

It takes a lot of work to maintain a relationship. It takes a lot of very hard work. My wife and I have been together for 37 years, and there have been plenty of times we both could've called it quits. It seems todays generation doesn't understand how much work a relationship requires. At the first sign of trouble, they are ready to pack it up and move on. When we put our hearts on line we risk being hurt, and no two people can expect to sing and dance all the time. A very touching poem.

Kindness goes a long way. You are a kind person. Love cannot be forced. When love comes, it comes to us when it's most unexpected. When my husband and I met each other, I liked him because he was kind to me. Didn't really like him at first, but eventually I've found so many good qualities about him that I began to really like him. He was also very caring.

One needs to have an open heart and an open mind. I don't know that I agree with Ed about a fart being free. At the wrong place, time and volume one can shred your reputation!

When searching for a heart,
You'll find people rarely with a heart part,
It's so much easier to find a fart,
But then a fart is harder to keep,
But then again a fart is always free,
While the price for a heart can be quite steep...-e-
