Reflecting on the choices we have and don't…

Life Choices

Life comes to us, one and all.
No matter how big, or how small.

We have no choice in the matter.
From the time we walked, pitter patter.

To some, great fortune comes along,
they did not earn, but for a song.

To some it takes much growing up,
must work very hard to fill their cup.

Suffering the slings of outrageous fate,
for some, too early, some of late.

So many are pawns of the powerful,
like sheep to the slaughter, sorrowful.

Some die young seeking to be great.
Never reaching their potential or the gate.

Many waste their lives in trivial pursuit.
Wandering purposelessly to the down chute.

Many seek salvation at the end of their days.
Some live this life as the end of their ways.

Which would you prefer if you had a choice?
As a pawn to the power? Or with your own voice?

We all have choices that make the difference.
Regardless of life's whims; it is our inference.

Obstacles in life need to be faced and dealt with. Only then, I've found, I have been able to meet my needs. Choices come with chances to succeed or fail. Great write and 'love the collage!!

Love ya!

This is the worst way to die. This was my brother's fate. A brilliant mind snuffed out in the prime of his life.

A fine march through the possibilities that many people face in making choices. It seems sometimes we have no choice at all in many things. I think you have covered pretty much all the important bases in this charming set of rhyming couplets. John

You are so lucky to have all those pictures of your past & family as all mine burned up in a fire, but I have my memories on file in my head, at least some of them.

Really a thought provoking & intelligent write, Ron, I am going to be thinking on this one for a long time...-e-

A very thought provoking poem Ron. Well done! I think the bottom line is most of us wind up doing what makes us happy. I am NOT happy being a single guy. I thrive on helping another person through life. I cannot understand people who are unfaithful. It's the major cause of divorce and it can ruin a whole family for life. Choices have consequences and serious ones at that. I have chosen to believe in God for to deny Him I may never see Heaven at that's where it's where I want to be at. Amen

Yep. Too bad we have to start making choices before we have any real knowledge to base them on.
Love the collage! Interesting that you put it with this poem.

Life choices are often tempered by obligations greater than the self.

Far to many people live their lives in a bubble, and surround themselves with like minded views, insulated from any thing else approaching a different view point. For them, everything is cut and dry, and one sided, whether it's true or false. Their voice becomes one of the many in that bubble, and they either don't want to hear other voices from outside their bubble, or they choose to ignore or dismiss those other voices. Social media and 24 hr.cable news shows are a big part of the problem.

Retaining "one's own voice" is the operative phrase in this well crafted look at choices. With so much of society needing to be part of the whole, rather than maintaining that individuality is counter-intuitive to the natural instincts of our species. Pity so few exercise the privilege.

True enough, Ron, but at the same time what is "trivial pursuit?" Some come out of this trivial pursuit a better person than most would ever think possible.
