A poem I wrote on my birthday in 1997

Birthdays

Birthdays come and birthdays go;

some bring springtime, others, snow.

I was born on the darkest day,

and shared my new life with a brother.

We were on our way.

Shared too, was Christmas, so close at hand.

Presents were few and practical,

and had to be shared, but Mom,

undaunted, and not one to fake,

made our day special with a,

few good friends and lemon cake.

School, work, marriage, divorce,

just living life, of course, got in the way;

years came and went, and we spent our pay,

avoiding the day.

But then, before it's too late, at 98,

we gather friends and family around

us and cut lemon cake.

Mom would be so proud.

I should hope so! My dad just turned 90 last month and when I visited him, I could only think...I hope I look and feel as good as he does if I ever make 90. Life happens while the numbers turn. Best to pay more attention to life than the numbers. Great poem. Thanks for sharing.

The years pass and we suddenly are counting out our last...aware at last of our mortality. I love how you set this out around the lemon cake, a unifying thread to draw the years into a basket of your life.
This is very touching!

I enjoyed picturing the different moments of life as you shared them with us in "Birthdays" ...

When all is said and done it is these moments that will continue to be remembered and celebrate by family and friends. We need to sometimes just sit back and embrace these moments as you have done.
