I never heard that we "din," but I believe that we still "sup," archaically speaking.

The Last Supper

The smell of coffee and bacon,

would make us come awake,

and rush down to breakfast,

our nightly fast to break.

Mom made us breakfast,

to rival Waffle House or IHOP,

but we loved crackers and coffee,

carbs, sugar and lactose, nonstop.

Hungry again at noon,

we would rush to the table.

Dinner would be served with,

what the refrigerator would enable.

In school, we would carry our lunch,

we had never heard of brunch,

never even had a hunch.

On Sundays after church,

dinner was a real treat,

with piles of fried chicken,

oh, so much goodness to eat.

Evenings were when we would sup,

the meat of the day was served up,

we would eat our fill until it was gone,

supper was a time to refill till dawn.

Off to college we went,

to learn new tricks.

Like haute cuisine,

and other fine licks.

Found out that supper was over,

and dinner was was now in.

To call supper, "dinner,"

was an Emily Post sin.

Miss those suppers as I drink,

etiquettely, my cheap wine,

eating dinner at suppertime.

Ahhh... now I know you better Ron. I can picture you in your childhood. I’m with you there - the smell of coffee and bacon is gratifying. I’m surprised that you attended church as well back then. A lovey poem overall.

Cute and colorful Ron, I love the mirth in your poem and your mom the Star!

It's not how the supper/dinner was served, it's about the gathering of all family members by the end of the day to sit down and eat and sharing the day's experience with others that counts.

A nice heartwarming poem! Enjoyed this!

It's not so much what's for dinner, but the gathering itself--rare these days.

A very clever piece indeed and you have a major point. Eating time have different names depending where you hail from.

An interesting read and image. Some of Emily Post etiquette, table-setting etc. is still used in certain country clubs. All the best. r

Nostalgic and cute as can be. For me, lunch was the noontime meal, and supper was the evening meal. Dinner has always been the same as supper in our house, but supper is the word of choice. Good food. Good meat. come on, lets eat.
