Some people just can't seem to find love. But a fatal flaw in their personality makes it very hard for others to love them. So, I wrote this song.

Fatal Flaw

Love is our fatal flaw,

sticks in our craw,

whether benign or raw.

Fatal flaw, fatal flaw,

there oughta be a law,

against love like that, a law.

In innocence we love them all,

especially the fuzzy, furry ones.

Or when we heard our mother call,

fearless, we loved them all.

Fatal flaw, fatal flaw,

there oughta be a law,

against love like that, a law.

But then, we were betrayed,

love was not returned, or delayed.

We looked for answers, but found none,

our faith in love, over and done.

Fatal flaw, fatal flaw,

there oughta be a law,

against love like that, a law.

But hope springs eternal

we hoped for the wished for gift.

Often tried and failed again,

love's heart was fatally rift.

Fatal flaw, fatal flaw,

there oughta be a law,

against love like that, a law.

Or as Edna St. Vincent Millay once wrote "Who's to say it wasn't love because it didn't last?" Many loves can be had, short though they be.

An interesting twist on the idea, and yes, in a sense, love I guess can be a fatal flaw for some; but not for others. They are the ones who make the world go round.

The problem with love is that you won't know it is fatal until you're hit with the final blow. I am an optimist. I would often look for the person's strong points first before I would look for his weak points and sometimes that is why people say "Love is blind", but there is nothing more beautiful to be blinded by love for you always want to make it work - Just my opinion.

Hi Ron ! 😻

Enjoyed the read. No doubt that unrequited love Sucks !
My 1st thought was of the Knights of Old... Championing a fair maiden from afar...
Chivalry !!!

Next thought was “The Courtship of Miles Standish” by Longfellow, wherein Priscilla
admonishes “Why don’t you speak for yourself John?”

Thirdly... Prufrock popped into my feeble brain ! Googled ( oops ! rather BINGed it ) -
“The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” by Eliot.

OMG ! A vague, foggy memory from 1962 . The University of Maryland, in College Park ... 58 years ago, in English Lit 100. Not one iota of a thought about it for Lo, all these years !

But you Ron Provoked it somehow ! As an accomplished Professor, you might appreciate these ramblings from a mere layman ?

Many years ago, I pennned a short story titled “Love Is Like...” Wherein I think I made a reference to the old movie “Love Bug” - an old VW named “Herbie”. I have no clear memory now, of Why ?

Anyway, an editor of a magazine in India read it on AD, liked it, and asked permission to reprint over there, which I certainly granted, with great astonishment and pride ! My payment was simply a copy of the paperback in which it appeared. It sits somewhere on a dusty shelf in my humble trailer home.

Ron - while I must apologize for such a lengthy comment, you again, are responsible for awakening my very old Muse, by stirring up my old writing “juices” ! Ergo, it is Your Fault!

P. S. My dear Friend, I have always respected you for your knowledge, aplomb, integrity, and wit !

Do you remember another dear friend and mentor of mine from AD - Elizabeth Lucas-Taylor ? Just a day or so ago, I sent her a lengthy email reminiscing of our days of yore.
She responded in the same fashion, with may details. She has illnesses now that confine her to a wheelchair, is now 79, and still maintains a clear and witty mind !

Most people call her Bette, but I have always used Liz. Anyway, if you never read her book “Unfinished Business” I Highly Recommend it ! 😎

Sayonara for now 😻✌️😎

Love can, indeed, prove fatal for some. For others it runs the gamut from sublime to wretched. Personally, despite the pain and uncertainty, I believe in it.

Ah yes, our fatal flaw is that we love not wisely but too much. Well said.

The repeat of your fatal flaw phrase is very effective in this piece as each time the reader has the chance to review a different aspect of your proffering that love can indeed be brutal and seemingly, unfair. Arresting write, Ron. Thank you for posting.
