Words can be very interesting. The spelling is related to the etymology of words--for example, the word right is related to the German word recht. Both originate from rex (regis) which means ruler or king in Latin.
So right and regular are related worlds. Rite is related to the word ritual, both originating from Latin ritus which means custom or ceremony. Write is related to German reissen, which means to tear. Writing was an act of scratching or engraving in the old days.
