What Do I Want

What Do I Want

In his comfortable leather recliner
Bill lay stretched  to his full length
Television loud, which he didn’t hear
Inward thoughts churning with negative strength.

I’ve gotten old and tired, he was thinking
All the family’s gone and no one’s left but me
I’ve got no goals I’m motivated to reach
No worthwhile life that I can see.

Lively music at once caught his ear
He trained his attention to the television screen
Energetic exercisers were hopping about
The instructor looking like an Amazon queen.

Today I want you to exercise your mind, she said
Think good thoughts all day long
I want you to think of the things you want
Instead of complaining like a non-ending song.

Bill sat up straight in his brown recliner, thinking
I want to be happy and alive, he quietly said
I want to be nurtured with hopes and dreams
Instead of sitting in this recliner like dead lead.

Let’s see now, what do I want? Bill said.
“Ask, and it shall be given you;
Seek, and ye shall find;
Knock, and it shall be opened unto you” (Matthew 7:7)
Everything I want can be mine.

What do you want?
Try exercising your mind.
If you put progressive thoughts in your head
You are bound to find—peace of mind.

I want….

We have those chapters in our lives that make us turn pages. Hopefully we all find a portion of what we want. Good use of Matthew 7:7 .

This is such a good write, because so many of us just don't know what we truly want. It also leaves us with hope in knowing that all we need is faith and to pursue. Excellent!

Nicely done. Made me think of what I wanted in this very moment and I pursued it immediately. Thank you for the inspiring words.

What do I want?
Is a very good question. Sometimes I wonder if we even know.

He sounds so lonely. If I ever get to this point, I think I'd volunteer my time. Maybe do some charity work to feel useful, keep busy, and leave a part of me behind. Great work on this poem! ~Sheila

I don't have trouble being active, thank goodness, I have more than I need at the moment. I'm running errands and walking at the mall or climbing the stairs in the bedroom for physical stuff. My new project, "Misdemeanors & Felonies: A Memoir" is certaintly giving my mind a workout each and every day, and I thank God I am in good enough shape to do both of these things at my age . . . Never thought I'd live this long . . .

"I Want," Jeanette, this brought a spark of hope inside to not just sit down and give up but to get up and "want." We all need to think positive...if we have some age on us, it doesn't mean we are "DEAD." Loved this!

I want ...
This poem fills me with hope and knowledge that 'it' can be achieved if I but envision it and put the plan into motion.

God bless you. Kathy
