I Saw My Mama Last Night (A Spiritual Return)

I've come very close to dying many times in an asthma attack. The one mentioned in this poem is one I'll never forget.

I Saw My Mama Last Night
(A Spiritual Return)

It was the middle of the night
And I was lying in bed
Curled up on my side
Fast asleep
When a dream, too real to be a dream,
Played out in my mind like a video
Of what I was actually doing and seeing at the moment.

I was dreaming exactly what I was doing: Sleeping,
Dreaming exactly where I was:
In my bedroom and in my bed.
When something jarred my attention
My eyes flew open (awake or asleep—I don’t know)
To see a shadow coming from the hallway
Into my bedroom door.

Was I asleep or was I awake
I couldn’t decide since the dream realistically
Occurred, mirroring the reflection of what I was
doing in that very moment as if I was
Watching my own self on a video camera.

Dream or not, there walked my mama
Into my room wearing a pink flowered robe
I had given her when she was in the nursing home.
Her hair was the same dark black I recalled so well.

She stood there looking at me,
Not saying anything,
While I kept calling “Mama , mama, mama,”
In disbelief that it was her.
I sat up on the bed, and then I came to my feet.

I knew she was dead and we had buried her,
Yet here she was coming back to see me.
“Can I touch you?” I asked, reaching out, expecting
My hand to pass through her as if she was a mirage.

But my hand touched flesh
And I threw my arms about her and began kissing
her cheek and hugging her, still calling “Mama”.

Then I suddenly  awoke,
My heart racing wildly in my chest
As I gasped for needed air.

Finding myself in a severe asthma attack
I wonder if mama came
To wake me just in time
Before my heart stopped beating?

Very intriguing experience, Jeanette. No matter how you interpret the message or the messenger, I think you received an actual warning to awaken. The rest is the mystery--now we see through a glass darkly, then we shall know.......Jerry

Many people report dreaming of loved ones. Even smelling familiar scents in the dream, too. I believe it's true, but that's just me. Thank you for sharing this poem, Jeanette. Love and Hugs,
Sheila

I BELIEVE THAT, INDEED, GOD REACHES OUT TO US IN MANY DIFFERENT WAYS...I NEVER DOUBT HIS ABILITIES OR HIS LIMITATIONS. YOU HAD A BEAUTIFUL 'VISION', IT WAS NOT YOUR TIME TO LEAVE THIS WORLD AND I AM GLAD YOU ARE STILL HERE. OBVIOUSLY, I AND OTHERS NEEDED TO BE THE BENEFACTORS OF YOUR WONDERFUL GIFT. Our loved ones have never left us. They are always there watching over us. Your mama appeared to you because she wanted to wake you up. Great recount of your dream!....or was it a dream? - I doubt it. I was so moved while reading through this. Thanks so much for sharing!!

I have sleep apnea and many times I hear a door bell ringing ( I don't have a door bell) some times several knocks at the door. They are so real some time I get up and go see. I realize then if I had not been awakend my heart would have stopped. I now have an CPAC. Jeanette, my first book is about a biracial boy coming up in the 1930's. My winter home is in Leesburg Fl. are you near there?
