April 3, 1974. The image is from Xenia, Ohio. This particular pic gave me nightmares for WEEKS.
I remember that one...I lived three and a half hours northeast of Xenia (in Mansfield) and the clouds from that storm came over our city, turning the sky a sickly yellowish-orangey-green. Scared the hell out of me.
A neighbor found a cancelled check in his yard...carried all that distance from an F-5 tornado.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Latent heat licks the earth with humid tongue; the sun shies behind a bank of blue-black clouds in the West.
Growling deep in its throat, the storm advances in a search and destroy mode; nothing below is safe.
The sky reaches toward the ground and grabs handsful of what was once people's lives, tosses them aside.
It takes just seconds for the community to come apart at the seams and break into pieces.
Lightning is the only illumination for a city gone dark - lives and memories, shattered.
Survivors emerge from the tangled remainders of their homes, wandering the ruined streets, in shock.
The calvary arrives in the guise of rescue workers, volunteers and fire- and police men.
Strangers open their hearts to those who need a home; shelters comfort those who have lost everything.
Tomorrow, they begin the task of rebuilding; tonight, they talk about what has happened to them.
Years later, even though scars mar the landscape, the city that refused to die stands, proud and defiant. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Oklahoma City. Waynesboro. Pleasant Grove. Jarrell. Oakfield. Chandler. Andover. Hesston. Niles.
Whoo! It's truly that time of year. The midwest weather dance with a tumultuous Spring Season in Mood Swings. . . I hope no one names their child "Weather" because it's so blasted unpredictable.
A heart stopping write Karla, I myself have been through three big ones...one of them I will never forget was a F-5 on Palm Sunday 1965, it was only one of a line of five that swept the midwest that day, I lost two family members
And you could add my hometown in Wisconsin to that F5 list.... Thank you for sharing your gift....
Today the vortexes danced ahead of a front and ravished and raped the countryside. It pauses upon the borders of Alabama and Georgia like a spinning cloud of Army Ants. It comes closer tonight just before my bedtime and I know my seep will be short as the vibrations become trauma.
I love the passion of a thunderstorm but lately...the vortexes are hidden within them on a regular basis.
Wonderful documentation, Karla! I admire a writer who does their research! It is how the rest of us learn when writers share their knowledge and wisdom with us, whether in stormy weather or calm. Love the blue you wrote in. It stands out as you should!
Damn! That is quite a resume you have of misses and near misses, there may have been someone watching over you during these "acts of God." I sincerely hope that you don't have to write of another town, another place, that you have been hit by the wrath of Hell in the form of tornadoes. I, myself, have never been inside of one of the meanies, except offshore and that doesn't count I don't believe. There are a lot of these things around, I believe one hit in Arkansas this morning, but I don't know if anyone was hurt, maimed or killed and even if the thing destroyed any buildings. I suppose we'll hear more about it if that is the case. The thing about tornadoes is that they give you not much warning, you haven't a lot of time to find shelter, and even if you do find some kind of shelter it doesn't matter, it can destroy whatever it is you are in if it is strong enough. Damn!
