Katrina, One Year Later: No Lady, She--

Nordette's "Hurricanes of Roosting Birds (Hurricane Katrina Anniversary)" inspired one of my own.

No lady, she--
she, who came storming onshore,
univited,
yet expected;
swirling her dirtied skirts
about, dancing
to frenzied tunes.

No lady, she--
she, the homeless wanderer
who invaded
our own, who stole
everything we had,
making it hers
and hers, alone.

No lady, she--
she, who left a legacy
of debris and
sheer hopelessness
in her wake...and vivid
reminders that
things ain't the same.

No lady, she--
the trollop who stomped onshore,
the thief in the
night, our killer,
our memories, failures,
this lady who
was no lady.

Excellent poetry Karla. Nordette may have supplied the inspiration but you provided your own slant and you did a great job. Katrina was no lady!

Dear Karla,

You say it better than most. I really think it's C..L when one poet is inspired by another.

Very well done, Karla, an impassioned write about the new BoogieMan/Woman creeping into legend. I remember seeing a newsclip of how Katrina picked up a casino in Mississippi and moved it onto land and the cars stacked up around. It's hard for us humans to comprehend the power if we didn't live through it.

Thank you, Karla. That my poem inspired this wonderful work makes me happy on another level that I wrote "Hurricanes of Roosting Birds." ~~Nordette

As we waited in a hotel room in Texas for a call from my son, a police officer, my daughter and I were almost certain we'd have no home to return to. Katrina skirted just enough to the east to spare us major damage but fast on her heels was Rita which spared my area nothing. Do you know that people here began refering to the storms as Kat-rita just to simplify things? She was no lady for sure and what was left in her wake will haunt us forever. Powerfully written Karla!

Has it been a year already? I guess it has. No one will ever forget the rape and pillaging of this one of a kind storm.

Great metaphor - lady as the storm - and vivid images of a horrendous time in human history. And also I agree with Bill below. It wasn't this countries finest hour.

Excellent write dear Karla. You have a keen mind.

Blessings ...

Your words are challenging, indeed. Perhaps, Katrina came to test us. If so, we damn well failed the test. And, that was not would the people survive te elements. It was surely a test of how willing our governments are to spend the money - UP FRONT
