Katrina: One Year Later--Needed: Miracles

For those all along the Gulf Coast who suffered Katrina's wrath.

Pulled this  way and that  way
by the tugging hurricane,
she comes apart at the seams,
flooding the streets with her pain.

The patient tumbles into shock.

Dark streets hemorrhage red,
surges of desperation
and violence; nothing can stop
the tide of mismanagement.

It wasn't an easy, painless death.

And now the body's been exhumed:
for what?  Why bother?  Hope won't
restore the vitality which once
throbbed in her veins...

Not unless we get the miracles we need.

(c) 2006, Karla Dorman.

A powerful call that we not allow ourselves to forget that we are long ways from recovering from the devastation. This poem itself, I feel, was/is one of the miracles needed.

Once a town like New Orleans has been raped by this devastating storm and then FEMA...it's hard to see her creep back a little at a time. I feel the pain and the fear of those friends I have in NO. They say she's never going to be the same again. Maybe not in our lifetime.
Thanks .

Superb remembrance Karla. We all should mourn for it is the worst catastrophe our country has seen, along with 9/11. They are still in dire straits! God help them!

Yes, it seems it has caused problems all the way around-I've heard that in Texas, the crime rate has really risen in some of the towns the misplaced people went to-crazy situation indeed.

Anniversaries are so poignant... you relive the day, regardless of 364 intervening... this is so fresh and raw, Karla, it is searing - doubtless as you intend. Miracles aren't ONLY in the domain of God... sometimes we humans have the needful capacity to create a few of our own... Powerful, bless you K xx

Karla,

We must pray for those poor people on the Gulf Coast; they are still reeling a year later. This should not be; we need to be helping these people (and they need to help themselves as well!)! Gripping, hardhitting write; very well penned! BRAVA!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your twin sister, Karen Lynn. :( >tears <
