R E D used to mean the high
blush shading my cheeks when
you looked at me; used to be the
taste of red wine on your tongue
when we kissed; used to be the
brilliance of roses you'd surprise
me with; used to mean heated
nights of passion spent together.
That was before: now it is the
shape of your slap on my face; it
is the anger of words spoken in
hate; it is the sound of a slamming
door; it is the pain of a broken heart:
once, my favorite color was R E D ...

Karla, this is expressed so clearly. The love/hate transition should never happen to anyone, but it does happen all too often. So far, such destructive events make up about 30% of my HaltAbuse.org cases; where ex-love has escalated through hate and into full-blown violence. Red is one of my favorite colors too ... And I am in total agreement with Fee on this one ... Great poem, Karla ...
Superb... I wonder what you'd think about making it into a sonnet... It's got 14 lines already, and it doesn't have to have hard rhymes-- slanted will do... what do you think? --Charlie
