Children dying overseas from hunger,
from sickness. Wars tear babies out
of their mothers arms, dashing hopes
for a future. Disasters come in like a
flood, like a drought - untold millions
suffer. And we don't have problems
here at home? What about our own?
We have families on the streets; more
joining their ranks with every job cut,
every foreclosure. Maybe no bombs
crashing down on our heads, but each
day, we wage war against crime and
bad news and fear of the unknown
and hatred and: the list, endless. Our
hopes and dreams for a future looking
dim, right here, in our backyard. We
are expected to lend a hand to those
in other lands when they need it: we
do, above and beyond. We are a
giving nation. So: where is everyone?

I've often thought the USA is far too generous for what we can afford. You're so right. There are serious problems (homeless, elderly care, orphans, disabled, and veterans) here, and always has been, which we should be attending to first. Not to mention the gangs that should be broken up for America's own good. You told this one like it is. Love and Hugs,

The economical crunch has arrived here in Sweden, yesterday 30.000 got the pink-slip, SAAB cars = bankruptcy, and with it a few around that depended on SAAB's solvency.
Back home, we are putting money in the pockets of the ones that caused the economical disaster, instead of using that money to pay all the mortgages so the banks will have the money and the people their houses.
Well, the politicos gave the money to the banks without conditions and the CEO's gave themselves fat bonuses. Is President Obama crazy? He could have wipe out all the houses mortgages with the same money he gave the banks! after all those monies were given to the banks!
Maybe I am stupid after my Mathematics Master degree, but 2+2 is still 4?
We don't share with everyone...I look at Haiti and wonder where the USA has been in helping them.
That thought aside...it is time to take care of our own problems.
Seems every where I turn,,,I have heard such sad stories,like you say in our back yard...something needs to be done,,as I fear it is going to get much worse before it gets better...at the cost of so many families. :(
If I interpret this correctly, you want all those other countries that we have sent aid to in the past, now come to our aid...? Fat chance, its kinda like "loaning" money to family...;-) Ed

The sad thing is I fear with the advent of technology and globalization home is expanding to the planet earth. I agree we should be helping all of these cases but maybe like a triage in a hospital we should be looking at better ways to prioritize...
Powerful poetic commentary Storm Spinner. Acknowledgment of need is a first step to the solution of any major challenge and like much of the rest of the world, we're only just now getting there. Greatly enjoyed the read.
Absolutely! How about helping our OWN citizens instead of helping the rest of the world, and those illegals who knowingly break our laws, but they don't give a rip?? How about our VETERANS?? Powerful poem, Karla, should be sent to every Congressman (and our President) in Washington, DC!!

Sadly insightful dear Karla. Everyone struggles and suffers in their own unique ways; physically, mentally, emotionally, financially, spiritually. There is a spirit on this country that is effectively alienating people from one another, and in so doing quashing the 'hand extended to help another' mentality that is central to the Gospel of Jesus Christ - giving unselfishly.
