Ronald, no, am not a meteorologist or have credentials. I am a certified storm spotter, though, as well as secretary for our local chapter of the American Meteorological Society. I don't have a car, so I 'chase' off the front porch or from my safe place. Do what I can to help the NWS get the warnings out.
Yes, they were scientists, and like those that go to the ends of the earth to study volcanoes close-up, there is an ever present danger in being that close.
I was surprised last year when the Discovery Channel did not air another season of one of my favorite shows, Storm Chasers. I believe now that they purposely stopped the series because it was causing a lot of people who watched the show to come out and try storm chasing, putting many more people in harm's way.
There's really no benefit to science when a lot of hyped up thrill seekers are racing up and down roads trying to get close enough to film a tornado on their smart phones. It is really unfortunate that it was scientists that were killed, and not thrill seekers out for kicks and nothing more.
Like hurricane Ike in Houston, I noticed that people in Oklahoma got in their cars and drove out into the storms in panic, rather than paying close attention to the warnings. Traffic may have prevented these scientists from leaving the scene of a oncoming tornado like they often did in the past. Why do people rush out into a worse situation? I don't know. We have a tendency to panic rather than to be logical when severely threatened.

So sorry for the losses of those chasers; when bad news strikes, it hits far too close to home! My prayers are for his friends and family. Painfully sad write; very well expressed! Well done, Karla!
