We deceive ourselves
thinking God cares
less about red
or yellow or dark skin
than He does white.
We continue
with this tom-foolery
in our portraits
of a whipped-white,
albeit Mediterranean-born
Jew of Nazareth,
Jesus hung on walls.
We deceive ourselves
thinking of an
overhead heaven
that houses no former
whore, ex-gambler,
ex-killer, ex-drinker,
ex-down-and-out poor.
We reinforce
this deception further
when we refuse to give
one of these implorers
the pukish pittance
of a copper coin
as she or he walks
begging
up and down
satiny streets of sleaze
whether self-imposed
or not.
