Sometimes, Robert, being a true friend means just accepting that other person for whom they are and understanding that we cannot change the ground that they have already walked upon and the way that it creates their reality today. Love them for those things in them that you find to be amazing and overlook the rest. That is what friends do. No one is perfect and no one is exactly like us and just because we believe our path to be the correct one does not in any way mean that theirs is not also a correct one. Friendships require roots that rival those of the mighty oak, love that is as ever constant as the green of a pine tree and the flexibility of a willow, if they are going to survive. Sometimes we are mistaken as to what another person’s position is supposed to be in our life and in being mistaken we tend to try to mold them into who we think they should be instead of allowing them to grow in their own ways. Accepting and loving, that which is different, stirs a deep fear in all of us since it challenges all that we believe to be true and the very foundations of our own lives. If we don't accept others as the persons they are then our friendship becomes invalidating of the other individual and not nurturing, as friendships should be. This is a wonderful heart rendering write, Robert, one we can all both relate to and learn from.

You are a lovely man. What I see reflected in life and in our work as poets is that we get lost sometimes wanting someone else to be the missing link in our lives when the missing link is us or God or to fill a hole that only we or God can fill in our lives. Even when we are quite spiritual and intellectually evolved, we may fall into this trap and waste time and energy searching for loves that will never come because they don't exist. For those of us who are mistaken to be the long lost love or the best friend who will solve all for the one who is temporarily lost, well, we can only love that person or befriend him/her to the depth that our passion is intended toward the individual at the moment we meet them on our path and to the level of our capability. The person and God must do the rest. And that's that. Oh, why tell you anything, Shaman. ;-) You're not all knowing, but you do friend well.

Such sensitivity, grace, empathy and compassion. What a selfless friendship you offer - and yet, within this feeling write, there may be something of the reflection of the voice's own longing within it. So many facets of a crystal heart displayed here: ones that reach out with an offer of love to be as much accepted as drawn on. I sense a kind of symbiosis here... the more we know of others we really care about - whether we are truly close to them or not - the more or own heart intentions and needs are revealed and exposed. But, to see the person that the "reflection" truly highlights, and to encourage that person to come into the fullness of that projected existance, then that is mentoring indeed. And: "monster"!!!
