~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You always moved away from distress
Like the day you packed your bags
And drove aimlessly up the coast for hours on end
Searching for direction
Trying to regain perspective through your tear-filled eyes
Trying to fill the void inside you with a sense of purpose
Wondering if you will ever reclaim the home within your heart
Or had life already taken its toll?
The cool ocean breeze felt so refreshing
Yet it was just a temporary haven
Where your thoughts could abruptly rest
And reevaluate your dreams
Or try to reinvent your past
Were the memories you rather forget
An omen of things yet to come?
You always had a self-fulfilling prophecy
Of being attracted to adversity
Your precept of irrelevance
Was only a thwarted memento
That you still had so much more to learn
And so much more to offer
Even by suffering
Even by subjecting yourself
Through ages of stolid urges
And insatiable desires
And deep inside you
You knew you can only find peace
When your finally demand it
Admitting to yourself
You can only embrace life
When you openly invite it
This is where you shine for me, Robert... your gift for writing layers, thoughts inside thoughts... to go in one direction, trying to find direction... at least once in every read, you stop me in my tracks.
Ahhhhh... but it's those last two verses that caused the audible sigh. You are a thinking observer of the human condition. katy xox
Life is a river that flows through us
and we discover joy and peace
Great introspective write. A view of internal thought processes of a man who is in touch with his feelings and those of others. It is this sensitivity that allows you to write pieces that others find themselves in. Much wisdom in your words Jude.
I read this last night, but was to tired to be sure I could understand it.
So true, the one person one can't get a divorce from is ones self.
Masterful lament. Chasing the wind. Until one realises their true worth..
...You can run but you sure can't hide... at least, from the knowledge of yourself. A beautiful preamble to what, for me, is the crux of the matter in the final two stanzas (which could stand on their own). You make it plain that life is what we CHOOSE to make it; but how many of us, while appearing outwardly "rich" are living in an inner "poverty" of our own making - my definition of "poverty" being a lack of free choice? "Can't" must be the most powerfully binding word in the human lexicon. There is so much more to peace than the absence of war; but how far-reaching are the consequences of that war when it is waged so deep inside the spirit of one's own being. You hold a mirror up to our faces here that speaks so much truth and which graciously suggests that there IS an alternative to living a withered existance... if we would only stretch out our hand to grasp it. And a sense of purpose in life can sometimes be a great distraction... excellent messages here, Jude. TY and Bless you, Kate xx
i think maybe sometimes when we run away we meet ourselves on the road. if we're lucky, we get to learn that there's a distinction between suffering endlessly to cover our desperate need and deep-seated fear of not being enough AND surrender, the kind that allows us to open our arms and let life be what it is, let ourselves become who we were always meant to be. excellent message here.
Excellent observations in this contemplative poem.Your last verse says it all! Adversity can't be avoided, peace must be sought. life is turbulent,we can only join it when we meet it head on, there is no escaping failures,but we can try not to repeat them
How many of us can claim this as an anthem? Funny how we seem to attract the very situations we try to avoid. The further we run, the more we run into ourselves. There is no peace in retreat, for only as we "embrace life" do we find ourselves. Incredible write, Jude...
It can be pretty amazing what people will put up with and how they will cast their lives aside to live in suffering; hoping that one day, they will finally be handed their dreams on a platter of gold. The belief that we all deserve more than we are willing to work for in life is a myth that many subscribe to. This is an excellent offering, Robert though it stings with your disappointment and disapproval. We cannot make anyone else happy as happiness is a gift that we must give to our self, as is love.
Take care,
Sherry
