I halfway agree. Calamity never healed anyone except to give some a wake up call to live right. Technology and better communication enables us to learn of and see calamities up close. It also clearly points out similarities and differences so that it is easier to have the required emphathy and response.

I painlessly use my credit card and help someone half a world away.

much truth here. calamity can always be a healer and I believe we are certainly seeing that it IS with all the tragedies and natural disasters of late -- I think humanity is finally ready to embrace the journey of being "delivered by our own afflictions" and I have no doubt that our Creator is bearing us along, helping us to engage with the lessons in ways we can never forget. great poem, Jude.

Yes Jude I have seen the same thing as you, as a lot of people spread gloom and doom over the recent past histories of international catastrophes as you say a lot more are reaching out hands and touching hearts once thought lost forever. Great write my friend and fellow poet.

Disasters throughout history have always seemed to bring humanity closer together, but I think it's truly a shame how we usually act towards each other in the 'in between' times.

Yup. India and pakistan at eachothers throats till the recent earthquake. Now they are helping eachother, rather than killing.

Hope sure does come from ashes.

The worth CALAMITY is the lack of togetherness in a family. That is one that will destroy great majority of the earth's population; and which is the biggest society's CANCER to plague USA. PUT ON THE ALERT

I'm afraid this is just Positive thinking. And true as long as nothing is wrong. But there is too much wrong to bounce back delivered yet.

There is quite a difference between people and governments. Governments must know borders and have concern for differences and security but people only know that all of us are really the same and when disaster strikes, we want to do whatever we can to start healing the gaping wounds. Food, water, clothing, medicine and shelter should be granted to everyone, be they friend or foe, for they are human needs which are separated from the other needs we must address when we discuss the survival of nations. Simply because I feed you from my table does not negate the possibility that you still wish to kill me for my convictions. In the end, the destruction and death will be of such great proportions that all who remain will have to become interdependent or die. Hopefully the few that remain will choose interdependency. We live in a scary world, but we may be seeing only the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Your poem is excellent and when I read poems, articles or stories in this genre, I always think of John Lennon's song "Imagine." If only we could make all that he mentions in that song a reality for the world; it would be everything that we have always dreamed of.

This draws a sharp line between the empirical self-immersed and the eternal self which stands far above it. It is only intelligent that our life's work should be adapted to Jude's perspective. Man's usual work relates to the consequences of greed and ego we are noticing entirely too much in today's society. We need to unite and adjourn inflated egos, and second the motion to thicken the insulation of environmental awareness. Great mind work, Jude!
