All I want is to protect you
From the storms of misplaced friendship
From gusts of egocentric approval
And outbursts of twisted logic
From the whims and contorts of atmospheric anomalies
And hidden poisons with outrageous agendas
I watched as you strolled along a dirt path
In the cold of winter
You hair flowing out from a scarlet hood
You breath rising into the air
The sun emanating from your eyes
But iniquity hovered around you
It was disguised as the best of intentions
And its was salivating at the chance to acquire you,
Like vaporous vampires
Desperately longing to form within your heart
And suck the life force from within you
Today you were walking
To simply escape the negative demands
Some friends had expressed in earnest
And you were searching for solace
You noticed me running to catch up to you
And you eyes caught my smile
You sigh told me you knew you were safe again
Ultimately, I was protecting myself
WOW....YOU HAVE CAPTURED REAL FRIENDSHIP AND REAL LOVE IN THIS FABULOUS TOP NOTCH PERFECT POEM.Excuse the capitals but I think it is a capital poem.Wow again.
Best wishes always to you and yours

btw i'm sure kate means the sussex coastline... and walk on the sussex downs not exmouth moors or york this time of year:) brrrr..
enigmatic? selfish, or just inner self preservation in the last stanza.. prolly the latter being the sixth beetle.
yup other's demands can be tiresom less one learns to say no no no..
Others have caught the cinematic qualities to this one, too, Jude. For me it has The French Lieutenant's Woman flavour to it, screaming the Dorset Coastline. So, guess we can all relate to this delightful 19th Century(seeming) cameo on one level or another: when men were men - even though sporting hose and tights - and ALL the women had bats in the belfry (not just the poets!! :)) And did this lady ever doubt for one second that his smile would catch her up?! Guess her eyes always knew what her sigh was impatient to express. Love is... letting others go it alone when it's good for them to do so, but being there lest they fall, perhaps. But yes, agreeing wholeheartedly with Sara, we have our own needs must angles to these things too, sometimes. A (cold!) breath of fresh air stylistically for you! Fancy a walk on the North York Moors?! :))
The Protector was first sealed away in an ancient crude stone cabinet. This belief encapsulates the first stages in the evolution of animals in the human mind from teachers to ancestors to protective spirits in a measure of the flexibility that made humans so successful that in none of these stages do the animals stop being prey.
Like the story of the yogi who sat meditating on the banks of the Ganges saw a scorpion falling into the water before him. He scooped it out only for it to bite him. The scorpion fell into the water again, the yogi rescued the scorpion again to be bitten a second time. It was repeated twice more. A bystander asked the yogi why he kept rescuing the scorpion when the scorpion's only gratitude was to bite the yogi. The yogi replied, "It is the nature of the scorpion to bite." It is the nature of the rescuer to help others when they can, also being the protector of one's own personal heritage.
The Protector represents the spokes of a huge wheel which each of us travel, the poet's flight of imagination, the inspired work of artists, and the visions of prophets all watching over our daily movements.
"You sigh told me you knew you were safe again
Ultimately, I was protecting myself" Love this conclusion. Seeking to protect the one who would understand and protect, as well. I Really liked this piece, Jude. You brought ver strong images to the page.
"You noticed me running to catch up to you And you eyes caught my smile" I like this part because I've noticed that you don't smile in your pictures. The entire poem is rich with color and starkness, fear and comfort. Excellent write, Jude.

Whenever we embrace someone else, we also embrace ourselves.
Shaman Strudel transforms to become Red Riding Hood's woodsman. :-) Delightful! You make a good hero, poet. But yes, who looks out for the protector's heart. Deep and touching write, Jude. Truly. ~~Nordette
This has a thespian feel to it...there are so many "you's", the elements and objects appear to be aphrodisiac and present an excellent humanized picture, as a whole, when they meld together. I liked how you tied up all the images at the end. Life has trials, doubts, temptations and what not, it is our consciousness and awareness which see us through!
Indeed. Protecting that which makes you happy from not being there to give you happiness is a very powerful force. I love the imagery Jude. I could feel your need to stay in her presence. ~ Sara
appreciate the tale of the protector and the revelation. even more, I honor the subject itself, our need for protection from things unseen is paramount if we are to seek and find solace as we make our way through cold to the center of who we are. nicely done, Jude.
I can see you watching yourself making sure that you have eyes to see anything that may "hover around you" that may be looking to rob you of your peace. All shamans/mystics, etc must learn to protect themselves from predators other than just the human kind. Superb poem!
Perhaps "..Quiet Storm" will help rekindle old flames buried and long forgotten or express the love so deeply locked inside of your soul longing to be released.
Regardless of where you may be found in love this beautiful masterpiece can be
A further collection of poems, many from years in the Middle East, but also the California San Francisco and Central Coast areas (Santa Cruz, Carmel, Big Sur, Berkeley, etc.).
If you tend to believe romantic, passionate, masculine poetry is a thing of past eras, read "She Intrigues Me," and be swept away in the beautiful craft of a contemporary poet of love.
