Heartless Shape

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Each morning, the mirror before her bed
Captures her tired eyes:
Tired of seeing into the reflection she created
Tired of wondering if her dreams are still valid:
Tired believing in her lies,
Weary of the truth beyond her reflection
Each morning, she wonders if her breath is her own
If the cup of coffee is real
If the voice on the radio is speaking to her
Or echoing the rhetoric inside her own mind
Each morning, the news is superimposed with inconsistencies-
Every frequency she tunes into
Stumbles over and over like a worn out
Momentum of mislaid prayers and lost musings
And only a vague recollection of sweet scents
Is recaptured in a rhyme or two
Scribed within the aroma of lost affections
Here, there is little to speculate upon:
The sunrises in the east and sets in the west
At least these truisms still remain
As references points to respire within
And offers some solace
That life still flousishes
Beyond the fluttering movement of bedroom curtains
Here, when she looks to the sky
Through her clouded window,
She remembers when love was alive
Before it was twisted into a heartless shape
And became unrecognizable
Even to itself
excellent capture of a morphed reality. I don't think labeling or dismissal of a person in this state is at all helpful - responding more to previous comments than your work here. take care, Dawn
Few things compare to the pain one feels after losing a true love. Your poem reflects the psychological shades of a woman going through these heart-ripping changes. When real people go through this, they walk in the shadow of emotional death on a tightrope; tilt too far to either side and you're doomed to either bitterness or denial. Well done, Jude. ~~Nordette
You pen a classic here Jude, that expresses the pain and anguish of the spirit that is crushed and confused, lost in a maze of its own making, with no perceivable way out !
It may sound heartless, and it is, but as the truism goes " Hell mend them ! "
Your muse is going through menopause. Give her some Black Cohosh and Wild Yam root. Natural hormone replacement therapy will give it all back to her and her heart will sing again with lux.
Deep, dark thoughts of a woman. You are traversing this territory well, for a man.
... And ain't that just the truth? The yin and the yan of existance... healthy existance, I think. Or, at least, the litmus paper of the willingness to feel - EVERYTHING that life might throw at you. And yet the shadowlands don't exist without the knowledge that still the sun exists somewhere on the horizon to create them, even if its light is somewhat withheld. The truism that the sun does, indeed, continue to rise and to set is the greatest truth in our established existance as we know it at the moment... and it will continue to do so until the end of "time". Sometimes we revel in each sunrise and celebrate each sunset... sometimes we just stagger from one day's end to the next. This scenario could be true of both the "she" who is bereft of dreams, and of the "she" who has endlessly inhabited them. Dreams and nightmares are but the "moods in motion" of the same thing, perhaps. Anyway, this is me on a daily basis... usually between 2 and 3 in the afternoon when I am both overdosed on Earl Grey and yet craving another cup... I am heartless without a tea-bag...!! :)) LOL Kate xx
Ah, Jude, how many, many people are like this; living day to day and moment to moment, only vaguely knowing there is another life that is better somewhere, sometime, someplace. If only they could make themselves break away!!! Laugh! Cry! Anything, but this *vague recollection.* Excellent piece! Sad, lonely....
Peace.
Very very emotional and often so true when the reality of the present catches up to the hopes of the past.
This is a very moving piece Jude, it resonates an anguish all to familiar. It's a sad fact that it almost descibes someone I know/knew.
Guess I should keep taking my zoloft, I don't want to be back where this poem says I was at one time...though thinking the radio was speaking directly too me, was, at times, quite illuminating...;) ed
The echo from this poem sent shock waves through me as I could envision the fear that must rock a person with this type of disorder. Powerful images that seems functionally descriptive and rather educational to read, unless of course, it was a reflection of the life of the one who was reading this. Excellent writing, Jude.
Take care,
Sherry
