Tempestuous Sea

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I would surrender part of myself
To relinquish the depth of your pain
And carve up the domain
Of disingenuous demons
Encircling the vicinity of your wounded soul
Because I can see a dove flying over you
As I spot rays of light filtering though the leaves
Obscured from your view
Your head tilted down
Wearing a large brim hat
Sitting under the shade of a giant oak tree
Reading tales of betrayed romance
Listening to songs of disenchanted tears
But what’s a friend do?
When the image of life is broken
Into small fragments of exhausted emotion
And the power of sadness
Fills the landscape with shapes of gloom
And a sense of helplessness fills my heart
Yes, what’s a friend to do?
But offer a fleeting smile
And a shared hand
As you raise you eyes
To capture the tempestuous sea
So clearly beautiful. Such pure, beautiful empathy. Gorgeous.
Just the eyes to see and behold, and the desire to stand alongside in ways for which the friendship is loved and valued is the most needful thing in every circumstance. No words is fine. Body language and non-verbal communication of just "being there" are sometimes the most effective communicators and all that is required. Emotional birthing and death throes are indeed as being born or dying - personal to each unique individual, and the offered smile and shared hand as much participation as can be humanly managed. Actually, this DOES remind me of the, often painful, passivity which is endured by the one watching a woman writhing in childbirth. Personally, I think perhaps I would much rather be the one undergoing the pain, than the one having to look on "helplessly". Observant and honest expressions of both intended support and feelings of inadequacy. Tenderly imaged. Beautiful empathy. TY K xx
You offer friendship and the gift of compassion to go with it. As you write, "What's a friend to do?" Thank you, Jude. Love and peace,
It is that moment of the smile and the sharing of the hand that often brings light to one who has lost sight temporarily. Wonderful write and it shows what a caring person you can be.
A sad friend is like a failed monitoring system on a moon rocket, it tells you something is wrong, but it doesn't go very far in telling you what to do to fix it...so we need to stay in the habit of completing the loop of friendship. A friend is someone who steps in when the whole world steps out...the eye lock is a powerful magnet in reading one's soul...if you can hold your friend's eye longer than a few seconds, it's a clear sign that you can help them get their sadness outside themselves...and also those who don't know how to weep don't know how to laugh either...
your soul is an ocean and the calming sea of mystery contained within your words has me lifting my eyes toward hope, Jude. I'll bet the girl in the hat, real or imagined, feels the same. it is more than enough that you are who you are and that you are able to see those doves flying. thank you for speaking to us through poems of the light obscured from our view. Robert ...
A lovely tapestry of bitter/sweet emotion and imagery. This write reminded me of the power that Herman Hesse wrote with - especially in Steppenwolf and Narcissus and Goldman.
You are a gifted man, with deep springs of creative thought. This one soothed my synapses.
This is so lovely. You describe, so eloquently, the ache of the person and the longing to reach out to that sad one and lift them and help them. True friendship extends itself and wants to help heal in these moments.
