~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He’s a scornful little fellow
Eyes like sickles
Embedded into the fingers of a foreign sky
His thoughts peer through a magnifying glass
Smeared with his muses’ blood
Celebrating his self-flagellating affection
He holds as dear as a mannequin
Fondling him through an ideological storefront
Ill in mind
Tortured by a spiritless infatuation
With sexual inadequacies
His barren mass
Comes in a sense of perverted glee
His words drip off his porcelain brow
Onto the self-anointed groin
He worships as a woman
Hanging himself nightly
From the bascule of his creative endeavor
Screaming out to the world
He is misunderstood and unaccepted
And that everyone is blind and inadequate
And only he can see
The truth of nothingness
When he passes by my window
He continues to look back at me
With tears in his eyes
Screaming out for my attention
Hands stretched out
Pleading for me to touch him
But all I can do is sigh
And remember he is only dreaming
Yeah...that's quite something. Regis is perfectly right that this demands more than a single reading. An exquisite piece of work indeed, with all the harshness of the statement.
guess I forgot to comment on this one. came back to reread and found the portrait just as disturbing, but even more stark in its truth. we are all desperate in some way, ensnared by the nightmare our life seems to ourselves or to others. incisive and gripping poetic profile. Dawn
A scorching, torched write of a searingly-wounded sounding soul. If this write had a soundtrack, it would be, perhaps, of some kind of wild animal in pain: struggling to get free of the snare, it winds itself tighter and tighter, exacerbating the wound and crying out though no-one can get near enough to help. And psychological wounding is the worst... we can stuff our heads and hearts with all sorts of trumped-up belief-systems to keep us safe in our own ivory towers. But sadly, once locked within them, we realise that we can never be free of ourselves: our God and our Demon, and just end up soiling our own space. Awesome imagery that seemingly responds to provocation; your phlegmatic response is exemplary on the one hand and acerbic on the other; always the poetic politician! Your ways with words are unbeatable. K xx
Robert ...
You paint a dark landscape that permeates the misty fingers of Dali's muse in my spirit. At one point I could see the albino in the DaVinci code peeking around the corner and snickering.
The image:
"Hanging himself nightly
From the bascule of his creative endeavor"
is so intriguing - especially in light of the fact that a bascule is a device where one end is counterbalanced by the other. Like a see-saw.
It's almost as if the character has a personality that never finds fruition in any incarnation that is chosen and is constantly vacillating, and oscillating, and fluctuating in its search for love or perfection.
A tremendous write!
Wow Jude -this is acutely observed, this scornful little fellow... His thoughts peer through a magnifying glass
Smeared with his muses’ blood ...a powerfully dramatic characterisation/evocation, and the ending is perfect - i haven't read better about this little fellow, your insight and clear presentation is so impressive - i enjoy reading your lines very much, thank you, Nicky x
Jude this is deep. The sense of the person who is lost in such a fashion, out of touch with the reality of his own mind is frightening to say the least. I hope he can find someone who will touch him even in dream world and bring him back where he belongs.
I think as poets, we all have a tendency to look into another's eyes at times and see some small reflection of ourselves. This is a deeply pondered premise, Jude, here in these lines. It is a set of verses one can interpret to fit their own viewpoint...which...I believe...is what good poetry is mostly about.
It is ones views and attitudes combined with other personality traits that makes one who he/she is.At times because of the high negativity he judjes others accordingly and regards himself best above all with his big ego thus seperating from everyone even denying his own inadeaquecies.He is bound for further desolation and is likely to die alone.Exceptional write.
First this is very well written. I enjoyed all the imaginative phrases. Secondly, to me anyway, this seems to be a poem that can be interpreted differently by the reader. I didn't read it as you were having the dream, but that of the writer and all the rigors, insecurities and what not that goes with writing and being understood. The writer wanting you to 'get' his stuff. Either way, it was a thought provoking read. Thank you.
A brilliant piece and very complex too. By remembering 'that he is only dreaming' I took to mean that his isolated existence is merely an illusion caused by his pained and distorted ego. I took your sigh as a sign of relief that pehaps the reality that can be experienced directly when we all 'wake up' is of a much more positive existence.. Thankyou
Whoa Jude that is some self depreciating dream. Take heart it's only a dream,though it portrays inner fears of one's inadequacies. Sometimes these dreams help us to connect to ourselves better, thus allowing us to reslove issues and move onward.
Take Care Jude
Holy cow, Robert, this is deep stuff here. Thank God it's only a dream -- we do tend to view ourselves in dreams either with visions of grandeur, or as in your poem, desolate and inadequate. You've done an excellent job of penning the negative.
Exceptional work.
CJ
Though it is an awesome characterization and powerfully written, the negativity is palpable...You have a scalpel for a pen when you do this genre,which is why it penetrates. I know that's what good poetry is supposed to do;-)
Bigger than life, you word paint a picture that shows the personality process of someone suffering from the delusion of a dream. Every action is evaluated here, as the protagonist seems to be a nuance of interaction and impotency. Fits the psyche of the long-gone window dressers...and mannequins are now anatomically correct...we use them in the cyber-sex industry where sexual inadequacies are abundant in this world of frozen intimacy...the truth of nothingness...
