~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
His face is etched with the streets of tireless graffiti
Growing up in a one room flat
Facing the EL
Surrounded by lots littered with old tires,
The shimmer of broken bottles,
The discolored aroma of faded newspaper
Reads poetry under lampposts
Stimulates lucidity
From within metaphoric ambiguity
Considers the physics of continual surprises
Drinking from within the lines
Of blood, wonder and maddening confusion
Meditates in forests, disputes war, feeds the homeless
Plays sax after listening to opera
Dreams of god whispering visions
Inside shadows of broken walls
Becomes easily lost in simple questions
Finds dreams in complex answers
Inquires into the mystery of existence
In smiles of children
And muddy puddles across wilting lawns
Sings to the sun while gathering lunar eclipses
Dodges brain bullets in midnight crossfire
Drinks wine with bums
Flirts with opulence in mansions of satin
Embraces the impoverished with a brotherly flare
Lounging in subways of hungry moods
Always maintaining balance and momentum
Always hovering over the center of cares
Recites poems on rainy rooftops
Making love in the moisture of basements,
Within the surreal moldiness of space
Centers on the lore
Of life’s synchronistic music
Searches for a cure
Within saxophone wails
Through the noisy turmoil of the city walks the poet, acutely absorbing every detail of what he sees, sprouting words and images pristine and clear as a gently flowing remote mountain stream. Words meticulously fitted for our eyes to absorb and discern within our own imaginations, breathing into us a life force seldom seen. You sir, are that poet. Thank you for sharing your gift with us!
Music is our unconscious thoughts becoming conscious. A thinking man has always been of interest to me, as it is true also in my choice of friends. Enjoyed this character sketch.
This is great fare...moving with an undercurrent rather than a frontal assault...but, I suspect, very deeply autobiographical...excellent expression of mood and spirit.
Wow! This is an artistic mind you write of, one whose attention is always been torn from image to image; who corrals what seems mundane to most, but who knows the tune of everything. ~ Sara
Totally enjoyed this very expressionistic portrait framed with impressionistis strokes of an individual fully immersed in the flow of his life's multi-layered context. A big beautiful canvas for what strikes this reader as a big beautiful soul.
You have the hunger of a great artist
On display here on this poem. And I'm not necessarily
Talking about a musician. I read this rather
As a soul longing for completion.
Beautiful sounds I hear in this
Lyric music poem of quality of life.
Excellent message within this write!!
Sounds like your new CV for the vacancy on the TS Eliot Prize shortlist! So much natural rhythm, internal rhyme and breathing in this piece that we could quite well assume that the voice is well able to blow a mean bluesy sax. But then again, brain-sax is equally as resonant - if not more so, playing across all the cognitive senses simultaneously. Wonderfully technicolour, Jude, and multi-dimensional. It's like a panned-out camera shot at the beginning of a (Fellini?!) movie, that then focusses in. A public tour of a private mind. An outro- as well as an intro-spective. Very saxxy as well as sassy! K xx
Beautiful write, a bit mystic...your character thinks deep and appreciates life to the fullest. Not everyone has an eye for detail such as he, it is the inquiring mind that sees more in a child's smile, or the puddle across the street than the average. You've allowed the reader to take an exploration through the mind of a very interesting character indeed. Enjoyed this my friend! The ending is hauntingly yet intriguing feel!
Deep and daring with lines that stimulate each brain cell as they are read. Especially loved the line "Dodges brain bullets in Midnight crossfire". This is one or your very best, hit too close home.
Within all the contrasts, by daring - in such a fluid way that daring is only natural and not just something super-heroes do - to plunge into opposites and climb them, this character (oh, so real!) "always maintains balance and momentum" because this character (who "finds dreams in complex answers" and "inquires into the mystery of existence"), this marvelous character... LIVES life to its fullest. Loved this.
Your pen explores the time lines of life... life in the city... where living space is tighter... exposed to uncommon and demanding forces. Words well chosen drift along, taking the reader on a far different voyage. An unforgettable tour of another mindset.
An unusual and different read... indeed! - Bill
I really do think that we have to experience life from all angles if we wish to become a well rounded person. Pulling our self up from a bad situation is very empowering and if we never turn our back on and never forget those who helped us get to where we are, we will forever taste the richness in life that everyone dreams of. This poem is very vivid, Jude, I could see the scenes unfolding in Technicolor as I was reading your lines. Very nice!!
Take care,
Sherry
