~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Brrrr …
It sure is cold here
Even in spring, your words
Steam the frost-bitten
Panes of thoughts
Residing behind the windows of your eyes
Today, you skate upon frigid emotions
Inside a ring of far-fetched dreams
Icicles forming
Around a skeletal trance
Going ‘round and ‘round
Frosted breath
Memories are frozen
By the negative temperament of sentiment
Pushed into a chilly landscape
Where hills and slopes
Of wintry embrace
Engulf this seasonal displacement
And ice-covered tears
Semi-hardened and self-reflective
Trickle downward
Alone and without help
On an icy slope
Of uncomfortably bitter moments
Brrrr …
Powerful imagery here my friend, an intriguing write indeed! Your words allow the reader to envision a person whom has experienced heartache, and lonliness, a part of life that we all face at one time or another in our lives. Enjoyed this much, you've expressed it well!
Blessings,
This is a supreme study of what, to my reading, is your observation - acute yet sensitive, as always - of someone's self-induced hell - the kind that freezes circle after tightly held circle of "negative temperament of sentiment" within. Brrrrr, indeed... but what a masterpiece, dear Jude - both poetic and of insight. I love the image of the "seasonal displacement" - one that I know (and hope your subject will soon come to realize) is totally wo/man made and therefore... within her/his/our own power to correct - and let spring come and be, naturally, spring.
... Get your clothes on, John... that might help! :)) Just call me contrary and left-handed, which undoubtedly I am, but the tone of this beautifully descriptive and observational write seems entirely mellow and warm to me. To me, that first quartrain is delightfully ambiguous, making me think that your subject is usually of a very positive, open and welcoming disposition. Thus it follows, given the mercurial and delicate imagery you have chosen of skating, this person will probably like as not as quickly find his or her way out of that snowhole as he or she fell into it! The key to this train of thought is in the title and your reference strongly to "Today". This leaves me actually feeling nothing but refreshment and hope... like a good chilly blast CAN instill into us sometimes! And the "hands off" approach is entirely compatible with the arch-independence of the one whose self-reflection calls for tears to be shed in isolation. I agree with those who have picked up on the sense of intimacy interwoven between the speaker and the observed. Non-intervention is sometimes the most loving act one good friend can bestow upon another, but this awareness can only usually happen between those who know each other well; in this instance, neither feels that they are left alone and out in the cold.
As a PS, I am intrigued that this is possibly the first time you have modified "dreams" with the descriptor of "far-fetched". To my mind, dreams, in your book, are always entirely feasible... otherwise they are illusions! :)) Just a personal observation...
Gorgeous empathy in this write. Well, I think so, anyways. LOL K xx
Times like Icy Moments require the Hudson's Bay Blanket, those stripes of red, green, yellow, black, and white honor diversity and the colors in each of us...Trail of Tears, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee "of uncomfortable and bitter moments"...this is a "trading post" write...a blanket measures the whole worth of the relationship, making it a high standard for all else...warmth to you, Jude...
