autumn's aroma

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
lured to a candle as an aura of assorted light
pulled to the center by a magnetic pulsating might
peering into darkness, a lantern looks ahead
peeling away misty layers, feeding life’s budding dread
cured by a potion brewed in quixotic lands
spread out like a lotion rubbed through caring hands
move in; move out, wistful forgetful dreams
look up; look down, cavorting to be seen
poured into a vat like wine left out to breathe
filling up the contours, fermenting in autumn leaves
the season changes blissfully, dying with open claws
changing quite magnificently, left with many, many flaws
Such beautiful work. I like how the last line shows that perfection is not obtainable; there is always work to be done. The second to last line is awesome - unique and powerful. Hugs,
Sheila
Ahhh, the sweet smell of death in the morning. Your fermenting little slice of autumn life I most dearly miss.
Ah, the beauteousness of imperfection; the glory of those fatal flaws. For me this is so suggestive of the intermingling of birth and death, how both are tangibly present at both ends of the physical life spectrum. Both are irresistible and irrevocable changes and metamorphosis. I am rapidly becoming a convert to Autumn, having thus far considered myself always a Summer girl. You remind us here perhaps that although we major on the season's burgeoning fruitfulness and harvest as it's primary highlight, in fact it is the heady brew of the scent of it's overblown ripefulness, like a good mulled scrumpy, seasoned and spiced, that takes us well beyond just a mere sense of well-being into all these other hyper-sensory and sensual avenues you mention. If I were you I would take steps to bottle this and label it under Abercrombie and Fitch; it would be sure to have us all beating a path to Fifth Avenue well in time for Christmas! :)) Beautiful saturation with mystical magnetism, too. xx
There is a very dynamic structure and flavor in this poem. Verbs and prepositions, the binary structure of each strophe, the rhythm and content: so many ways of emphasizing movement and change. Very good, and I love the particular mental image of "peeling away misty layers, feeding life’s budding dread".
Jude, I have been instructed to change my outlook on life. So, the opposite me says: the seasons change blissfully, yes, but rather than dying...they metamorphose. Be well. ~ Sara
An interesting "take" on the changing season. "left with many, many flaws" makes one think of the abuse to our environment
Your words flow most lyrically, Jude, adding a light and cohesive tone to this image-rich poem of changing seasons. I love it when you speak to us in rhyme. Yesterday when I was outside and could smell the smoke from fireplaces and the scent of the leaves as they change colors, I thought that writing a poem about that part of Autumn would be cool...you beat me to the punch!
Take care,
Sherry
