~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
   a small spider
surfaces from the folds
     on the comforter of my bed
   hesitating
       as it senses my presence
   considering if I am a threat
 to its sojourn
 once it realizes
   it is safe from unwanted intervention,
 it begins to weave a web
    under the pillow of my dreams
          where the entire universe
    remains caught up within its omnipotent grasp
didn't know spiders had that much power...but if so, I'll squish everyone of them. Great poem, Holly
Jude,
This poem makes me consider relationships in general. We move in to them with reluctance, hoping to not get hurt. Then, as trust develops, we become comfortable enough to be ourselves. Great piece!
you're so good - i'd of squished him for sure - those buggers have bitten me in my sleep before and i just squish em good.
however, if i were a boi - i might tread more gingerly without concern for appearances sake as inflamed flesh is so unbecoming on a female.
the conceptual beauty of this piece though is outstanding.
thank you, ~donna.
:)) Gotta luv Connie's comment! Yes indeedy, I have grown accustomed to the idea here on my beautiful heath by the sea that I have to share my complete indoor/outdoor existance with spiders. I have come to adore the ones that gift-wrap my house: they're the fat-bodied, hairy-legged, brown spotted-bellied ones... Hmmm... sounds like some folks we know in real life, right?! The most remarkable thing is that the morning dew highlights their overnight work and it is truly jaw-dropping... A complex web-world of the most intricate and differing styles and designs, clothing absolutely everything - sometimes even stretching from high boughs down to gorse or grass. Walking through it all is as mesmerising as a dream and weirdly soothing... Universal domination don't seem too far-fetched when I can see just what they're capable of in just a few hours! The omnipotent grasp inside the velvet glove...
... And what's a comforter? Sounds like a baby's blanket?! Nooooooo!!
Anyways, since spider's rule here today, here's my little ditty from 2005:
SPIDER’S PRAYER
She listens, attentive to the noisy strands,
invisible wires of crackling light
that hum with sounds of static.
Meticulously she maintains the song,
pauses respectfully between
each isolated note,
stores every word in windows.
Her tuner’s ear links thought to thought,
strings melodies for meditation.
That's some tricky spider, first looking about in feigned trepidation, trying to lull you into complacence, when the plan all along was world domination. No wonder I tramp on them!
It's kind of amazing how many interpretations and long comments were made for this little spider poem. You've caught many in your web of unique poetry.
cute little spider poem, i wonder why people fear them, is it because they move suddenly fast? A ponderer of a poem, in those last two lines esp. i need to read the reviews again and think more - good reading Jude :)
Many years ago I had a pet furry tarantula that had taken house in my sopertanker office. When in around Africa and the Persian gulf it kept my enviroment free of mosquitoes, flies and anything that crawler, even unwanted people which didn't dare come inside seeing Virginia (that's was her name, I supposed it was a she, what I did know+) promenading on my back from shoulder to shoulder.
Although, she never weaved no web, on my dreams or otherwise.
Jude, see what you done? make me remember!
Great write.
You have taken what many of us find repulsive, and have written it into a thing of beauty. Life is all in the way we look at it, isn't it? Nice write, Jude.
Well Jude I don't do spiders of any size well at all, so they would be in a lot of danger and for anything making a web anywhere near me in my dream or for real, I want a new bed. However I do believe you have created a fantastic write, enjoyable to read. Thank you for sharing.
Jude, spider symbolism in dreams usually refers to some situation where you feel trapped or stuck. Perhaps one dislikes their job and wishes to move on to something more interesting. Perhaps one feels stuck in a relationship. Just think of those emotions about being caught in a spiders web. Sorry, I just wrote what I felt from your poem.
Excellent in it's simplicity.
Peace, love, and light,
Arachnid spinner of the afterlife, death that no religion can avoid, the wonder is that the theological diversity of the spider can flourish without tearing apart its faith based web - "considering if I am a threat to its sojourn" - as in Tut's funerary gear - symbolic value, baboons greeting the dawn after a night's slumber as the scarab god Kherpi alerts the jackal god who guards the entrance...a weaving of immortality, Jude...52 bottles of embalming fluid wrapped in spiderwebs...I draw a feminist standpoint here with dream spider, the idea of a woman wielding such power, those threatened wish to eradicate her...
Sage
I could not have ever written this poem because my first response to any spider in my house is quick death by flip-flop. With silken flow, you lead us from the harsh reality of a spider on your bed to the painting of a dreamscape. Excellent work.
Take care,
Sherry
