active lull of present memory

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
looking out the bedroom window, recognizing morning
from the 13th floor of The Bronx’s tallest building,
you can just about see the entire borough
and beyond everything of its nothingness
further than the fleeting images of my previous dream
burrowing into the residue of  emotions,
embedded into the cryptic soil of subconscious innuendo …
I remember, circa 1977, playing chess on a glass table,
shaped like an painter’s cubist palette
contemplating my next move, my next superfluous
action, resulting in yet another stalemate
in a strategic pause of wit and wonder
when the entire world seemed like poetic dry spell
I remember, a myriad of expressions
who ventured through moments of my lifetime,
when I was rebellious, radical yet resilient
under the influence of Brazilian snowflakes
lined across the snuffled surface of artist’s muse,
in streaming sensations controlled by patterns of psychosis …
strange, what comes to mind
when the morning is gray, unbridled and uneventful
and just a petty flashback of meandering memory
under the guise of dawn
when the sun refuses to reveal its momentum
so reminiscences pop into view,
and the activity below the sky is neither surprising nor bright
do they really have a 13th floor? seems superstitious,
personally could certainly relate to poetic dry spells, well stated piece of an active lull
Lumpy grey skies, like a suffocating feather duvet, tend to fever the brain this way, I find. But I'm sure that each dawn of the days in question (which now seem but "petty flashbacks" and stalemated poetic dry spells) would have arrived fresh with a rosy hope and ever-brightening anticipation at the time. It's all a question of perspective. Perhaps the psychedelia of the insufflated tripping made everything else in the sky appear grey and minus Lucy and her diamonds! Your chess game wasn't on the 20th August by any chance, was it, when our Best Man was handing out joints in the garden to all suitable wedding guests, much to my mother's chagrin!! :)) Guess on the days that that fat old sun is stopped in its tracks, that's the day to get down to Yasgers, or at least to the Bronx Zoo and Botanical Garden, grub around in the dirt a bit and take a few tips from Alice's caterpillar and Lennon's walrus... they're full of surprises! :)) josstiKs Kate xx
i like this write a lot Jude - 'i remember circa 1977', too, i played a game of chess on a glass table, and it does snow in Brasil btw - it also sunshines rather a lot, and i have chased the sunshine at times, for fear of grey, the thirteenth floor, lost memories...but some i've found are precious, not petty at all, and i'll try to write about them, perhaps from a dark winter in London this time -good write, cheers Jude, Nicky xx
Jude,
You've captured the recognition of another sunlit morning through the ruse of life's youthful aspirations and though timely in the moment - retrospectively wasteful interludes with both a somber and exhilarating simultaneous vision that opens the realism that is our growth in intellect. If only we were old when we were young and young when we were old.
Thank you, ~Donna.
The wealth of words in this brilliant poem belies the jaded view you seem to have had while writing it...Another exceptional piece!
Now Jude, been in Brasil a lot of times (talk the lingo) and the only snowflakes I ever saw there was dandruff.
Also played chess like I was riding on a demolition-derby, not like a gentleman I am sorry to say.
But your poem, after taking me on a merry-go-round of memories, is a literary philosophical one.
That lack of conscious memory thoughts would be a sad loss indeed. To be able to let the mind shift and drift through our past breifly picking up old black and white memories is a priceless gift to share.
Sometimes an image...a thought...an action from the past pops into our minds...seemingly for no reason at all...but I think there always is a reason...triggered by something seen or heard. Thought provoking...as always.
The title fits this poem well, a pensive mood throughout. I always find it odd how we can be suddenly surprised with the flash of an image so many years prior and nothing seemingly connected to it around us. That is the feeling this poem gave me. Happy Thanksgiving.
