~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
today is the shortest day of the year
 no, it’s not the winter solstice
           or having overslept
         or a gust of wind filling my eyes
        it’s the suspended duration
   of thoughts I’ve been considering
    passing over the bridge in the park
on the walkway
    to the harbor where you briefly resided
         it’s an undeviating impulse to remember
           the brevity of your expression
   as it covered my thoughts
          like shapeless snowflakes
        melting on my eyelashes
            in the middle of the night
    from heated breath
              onto the appearance of your icy apparition
       I didn’t want you to see the reflection
    of my lost dreams from a distance,
              by the far-off shore where your footprints still wander
           so I didn’t blink
                   in the instant you disappeared from view
          now, my shortest day will live on forever
Although you state the facts of your shortest day methodically, they are filled with yearning and sadness. So many things jog our memories and fill us with remembered emotions; a scent, a sound, a certain place. These are beautiful,heartfelt lines.
Writing helps nail down a powerful memory, yet, the act of writing clarifies and crystalizes, too. Strong stuff!
... suspended thoughts of the Voice's own, merged with the lingering memory of the object's expression which serve to create a haitus in time and, possibly, communication between two who are otherwise seemingly telepathically linked. It's like the "I" is protecting a loved one from experiencing something of the pain (lost dreams) that he/she is going through, which seems very sad considering the inferred closeness (even if physical distance remains) that these two share. Hopefully this withdrawal of intelligence will be short-lived as otherwise it could be a very long night of the soul if the burden of pain remains unshared and continues buried inside.
I love the quiet, almost whispered and tender quality of this one, Jude. Reportage or a personal journal that is almost soliloquy. May it be well with your heart, Kartero... This actually reads like skipping a few heartbeats. xx
Jude,
This poem reaches my soul. I can feel your sadness and pain.
The following verse is so poignant and so real to me:
"I didn’t want you to see the reflection
of my lost dreams from a distance,
by the far-off shore where your footprints still wander"
You are such an amazing writer, I just love your work.
Peace, love, and light,
Amber "V"
My word, this is quite beautiful. And in a way, you display a great deal of inner strength, Jude. Don't lose your dreams, Jude... embrace them. Give them the warmth in you. ~ Sara
They say that in every relationship, one person of the two always holds the most power - the one who loves less. You have effectively captured the essence of an entire relationship though you have only written of its end and the aftermath. I imagine a beautiful woman standing before the subject simply saying "It's over." Or "Goodbye." The detached, cold ways of the woman leave the subject bewildered, hurt, vulnerable - wondering why he wasn't enough. Now, he carries this self-doubt and the dreams of what might've been with him until a new-found sense of self can carry him onward. Fine writing.
Some terrific images in this melancoly write that left me with the perception of a ship sailing away with someone you'd recently met that left tender impressions on your life. An enjoyable read.
Like a knife through the heart, your words bring back memories of faded relationships that either never should have been or never should have ended. A reflection of those fogy times that hover somewhere between why and why not, between happiness and sorrow. This poem is a gem of the utmost clarity, reflecting images from your soul, placed upon the page in your own exquisite style.
Take care,
Sherry
Like looking out from an unlighted room window, a tear mimicking a melting snow flake as the unblinking eyes contemplate that wandering tracks and the poet hides his heart so she can't see the reflection of his lost dreams.
Bravo! will no suffice.
Currier & Ives would have painted the "shortest day" with clarity and comprehension of poetic lithograph by ForÉse. This so reminds the firebrand of the "Awful Conflagration" produced by Currier of the Steam Boat LEXINGTON In Long Island Sound on Monday Evening, January 13th, 1840, by which melancholy occurrence over 100 persons perished...this poetry images a winter scene painted on the tree ornament in the collection of ForÉse. Thomas Kincade would be delighted to Light it up...
