~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 a group of friends sat around the campfire by the shore
      pouring wine with cheese and crackers
   intellectually chewing the fat,
     when a voice stood out and asked
                “what is poetry?”
   the youngest immediately responded by saying,
      “it is the waves and sea and creatures
     within the forests and mountains and icebergs way up north”
   the oldest supposed, “it is the strophe of sky and stars”
     yet another answered, “it is the voices of children playing
          while building sand castles”
   while throwing a log into the fire,
a strapping gent concluded, “it is the unbridled expression of life”
     she just smiled and remained silent, inwardly suggesting:
        poetry was the breeze
they felt on their faces while the sun was setting
         where the light of darkness mirrors all meaning
          expressing words they could never speak
  and would only begin to think of knowing
Well expressed in the meaning of each individual person and the idea is that each had the answer is within ones view of what is poetry. The combination and thoughts are merged, but ultimately the end seals everything together...
The answer is definitely in the effort to provide one :-) and this reader enjoyed them all.
Love the ambiguity of the final couplet, whether this relates to that Julia Roberts' Mona Lisa inner-smile or the work of the poetry itself. This reads like a gospel account of a band of happy poetry-pilgrims, exchanging their evolving emotions, ideas and observations of inner and outer worlds before trundling away again in their unique creative vehicles of choice... xx
Creative definitions of poetry, Jude. I especially like the ending stanzas. I also like the casual feel to the imagery. Hugs~
Poetry brings people like you into lives that need to feel and hear the thoughts that you are sending. You lift people's spirits, you make them think and you make them feel. That is what poetry is all about.
You do all of this for me and more.
Peace, love, and light,
Poetry can break the limitations of time
Hope is not the only a desire of loving
It’s also the symbol of life and death
Poetry can break the limitation of that
Experiences of loss has no limitations
It shows feelings of love, sympathy and hate
Of anger, longing and regrets
Poetry can dribble down your soul
As the mind continues to roam
Resisting temptations of another kind
Poetry can break the limitations of space
Thoughts pregnant, naked
I sit by the window of life
Temptation…one universe
But galaxies apart
Begging your planet to pass by
Poetry can break limitations of time
Hope not only a desire of living
But the symbol of love!
Love Tinka
this makes me think it does not matter, but whats great is that these people came together with their opinions.......because the very essence of poetry was a part of them, so each was right, and its amazing that folks in the three dimensional word would care enough to initiate such a dialogue....I wish I had friends like that lol ......I get my poetic interaction soley on the net......pax A
Hey Jude,this is a great poem you have written.Everybody on this earth is a poet even if some people may not believe that they are poets themselves or have experience writing poems.Poetry is one of the most creative and unique gifts that all of us have.Writing poetry is like doing yoga.A sheet of paper or the computer screen with a blank document is the mat and we use your thoughts and minds to stretch them out and take us to a place of our own fill with creative expression.I am proud to be a poet and a writer and everyone here at the Den is proud to be one as well,take care
The question is expressively done through your interesting poem. Poetry is all encompassing, all around us everywhere we look--absorbed and processed by the soul and turned into pictures that our pen shares with others.
Poetry is all that we are, see, sense, feel, know and imagine, confined within the constraints of words. Could anyone truly describe a rose to someone who has never known one? Poetry is, perhaps, just a stimulus for the memories or imaginings of the reader. This is a beautiful offering, Jude, presented to those of us who have abandoned the search for the answer and let our heart and soul pour our gift for words onto the page.
Take care,
Sherry
