Selkie's Song

This was written for a theme on Selkies

Gazing out when the waves rose high in the early morn

she thought about her selkie life before she was reborn

reminders imbedding themselves in an old forgotten cove

deep in the depths of a past, into a forever where she dove

Her aching seafaring heart she could never hand over to a man

no matter his pretty words of some true love since time began

or how he loved the way the light fell upon her long black hair

to her they were false hollow words that she could never bear

Salt still rolled in tiny beads across her pale bare skin at night

sometimes he would catch her standing there in the full moon light

her longing not for his arms to hold her with a lover’s embrace

but for her beautiful home within another much loved place

He knew those nights could only pass so many more times before

he would awake to find her gone and hear the closing of a door

alas, distant this love of theirs would be, for seven years or more

and all who look will see a lovelorn fisherman standing by the shore

Don’t mock him or think that you would do it different were it you

for all is easy said when you speak from the ignorant place you do

ignorant of a selkie’s warm passion when the waves rise high again

she meets her spirit on a distant plane where true love knows no end

"he knew those nights could only pass so many more times before he would awake to find her gone..." this line embodies not only the sadness and the lost hopes and dreams of the fisherman but also of all lovers who know that they can never have the one they truly love. It speaks to the heart and the soul and the mind brings tears to the eyes over the bitter sweet sadness of the selkie maid and the fisherman both. Beautiful poem Michelle with so much feeling.
