ahh, the dangers of growing up on a farm . . . The Scrabble War marches on. Charlie must now use my last line in her next poem. Suerte, mi amiga!

I've been to the edge
and I stood and looked down
but it wasn't my friends that I lost down there
baby

my fragrant soul
duped by curiosity
and that tractor-beam stench

I mean, nothing is as bad as
                 it smells

                         right?

and exactly what sound does a
                    rock make when it hits
                liquified chicken manure?

            and when rocks don't sink
              bigger rocks must sink them

                       and bigger rocks
                      lead to bigger rocks

and toddlers don't have a very good sense of

                             balance

some things are worse than they smell

and even with cow water and tomato juice
the smell lingers for a long time

            sometimes a lifetime

so I avoid curiosity and manure pits now

and I don't throw rocks

and people still tell me that without curiousity
there is no learning

and I tell them
there are some things not worth learning

Author's note: the first stanza is an adaptation of Van Halen's "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love"

Uncle Leo, Don't even think about crying Uncle. You are fantastic! I can still smell it. Not that --but the scent of victory. You done good in a stinky, sticky situation. And since you are so FABULOUS I think we can slip you a blank tile. We are rooting for you!

Farmboy. Fetch me that rock there--the one that got pitched into that great pool of icky chicken poo. Oh baby! You've just attacked me with Caca Feo. NASTY! But I am not left-handed either! Swoosh, swoosh, thunk. In the meantime, stay down-wind, and dream of * sweet-smelling *women. (a; woman) --Charlie

Leo, the difference between you and me: you are a MUCH better poet. By far. Even in mere poetic banter you chart new territories and plumb greater depths. I am just happy to be able to tag along. Now excuse me while I go and resume my "Ode to Earwax."

Leo,

I love these challenges the stretch the imagination and the Muse...my muscles are getting a work out, between reviewing you and Charlie, seeing what level you raised the bar to. Awesome reply.
