A heart hangs from the highest branch upon my tree – a gift from two children now grown and gone, erased from my life prematurely and without reason.
I wonder now if my ornaments hang on their tree, too. Or have they and their parents pruned their Christmas tree of outdated, unwanted memories like me?
I realize the trimmings on the tree are mere decoration, adornment to remind us of what’s most precious in this season. But, for me, these are more than ornamentation.
My heart hangs tonight from the highest branch upon my tree and tears flow, rolling down from eyes that lost their spark and childlike wonder long ago. Still, I remember.
Memories, I think, help define who we are. And sometimes they do weigh heavy upon us. In this season of remembrance for the Son of Man, I have no doubt that He remembers all of us as well. A powerful, heart-wrenching poem I plan to keep. Excellent.
