Getting Old
By Kathy Armijo

Who’d a thunk I’d be old so soon!
I remember I could hardly wait to be a teenager.
Those teen years were filled with rambunctiousness.
I lived life full of hopefulness.

Who’d a thunk I’d be old so soon!
The next milestone was anticipating being twenty-one.
Oh, what fun!
A young adult ready to set the world “on fire.”
This was my firm desire.

Who’d a thunk I’d be old so soon!
The years have flown by.
I had my children.  Heard them laugh and cry.
My “fire” turned into a smoldering of what I had once desired.
Yet, the journey’s been more than I hoped for.

Who’d a thunk I’d be old so soon!
I ain’t old in spirit.
My mind has a goal. My body says different.
Through it all, I’m a kid at heart.
Nobody’s going to call me an old fart!

Kathy, I loved this, and it's so much in tune with how I think. The last line made me laugh out loud. Well written!

Our bodies are aging. But they never guided our courses. The essence of our spirit and resolve have always been the masters of our course.
At ninety-five, only months before his death. My father had the twinkle of youth in his eyes and the laughter of a teenager when listening to a funny story. The glory of youth is not captive within our bodies. It resides within our souls. Another poem of great strength and passion Kathy. Keep the emotions flowing from the pen. Jon Michael Willey

Not knowing your age, STILL makes me laugh to see you writing one with such words about getting old. Y'all don't know what OLD really is...yet! "Old is when a close friend confides to a close friend,
"I'm having an affair."
The friend replies, "Is it being catered?"
THAT, my dear, is O L D ! - Old Bill

And who'd have thunk of the times we wasted. Its alright being young at heart, but try telling that to the knees.
Well said wee poem

Loved this, it's so true. Getting old creeps upon us when we're not looking, but as long as we're young in our minds and hearts, we'll always be young, no matter what our body tells us.
Take care

If you get a chance, read my "Images" poem. It speaks to the same feeling. Nicely done.

I know that I don't look old but im 31 years of age. Even though thats not really old it's how I spent those years. Im too old to do what I used to but too young to quit. If you're happy with what you've gained in life then getting old is a ribbon of success. I on the other hand have squandered my years with regrets. But, I aways remember that most victories in life are accomplished unseen. Great write.

I think its wonderful celebrating "getting old". The other option is to die, and I certainly choose getting old. Your poem is nicely done as you meander back to the time of your youth. Keep on staying a kid at heart.

Love that last line, with words like these you will never pass gas. Excuse me grow old, had to work of the fart word and pass it on.

Kathy you and I think alike, time goes by too quickly but I refuse to get old for I am still young at heart with a lot of living to do. Thank you for sharing.

Even though I will always be a kid at heart, many nasty people, including my brother and my wife, always call me an Old Fart! They are very mean! But I hope I never lose that little kid inside, he sure makes life a lot more fun, even for us Old Farts.

Kathy,

This is one I can certainly relate too. Even though the body can't do what I want it too at least the mind can. (lol)

Kathy,

No matter how old you get, be grateful: at least you woke up above ground and breathing. If you wake up dead, then ya got MAJOR probs. LOL Enjoyed this one.

Kathy no matter the age it's what we do with the years we've been given that count. Enjoy them however many they are.

Hello Kathy,
I loved your bio and now just reading some of your poetry. This one really strikes a chord with me, for tomorrow is my birthday, and I say "You're as young as you feel inside!" I will be 54 tomorrow and damn proud of it! Enjoy each moment of each day to the fullest with happiness and joy. It makes the journey that much easier to glide through!
Peace, Love, and Light,

Ah! I do love your spunk and surely hope you will never stop and let it go. The way I see it, now I am able to do all the things I was told I could not....... I do take full advantage too!

Be safe,
Karen
