Merry-Go-Round
By Kathy Armijo

Playing at the park as a kid was great fun.
We’d take turns pushing the merry-go-round, then, jump on.
The ride was always too short.
So we’d start over again and again and again.
We’d ride until we were dizzy.

How many things in life have turned into that merry-go-round?
Work?
Family?
Leisure?
Is it still fun?
Or, are you always on the run?

Do you ever want to just stop and play?
I often think of this throughout the day.
Wouldn’t it be a treat to just run away, and
Go to the park and have some childish fun?
Play on the merry-go-round?
Slide down the slide?
Or, get pushed on the swing,
Going higher and higher into the sky?

So often, I’ve envisioned a new high-tech merry-go-round.
This new merry-go-round has a remote control –
Because I get tired running.
And, of course it gives me the same old wonderful thrill.
Only, now I’m hoping I won’t get ill.

To be that care-free kid, again:
Enjoying life’s simple amusements.
Going round and round
With no particular place to go.

Yes, the merry-go-round is exhilarating.
Wish I had one in my back yard
Then I could always be a kid, again!
Woops!  Where’s the remote control?

Kathy, this is such a breath of fresh air. I remember when I was raising my children, I loved to go to the park. I would swing on the swings along with them..I admit, when I needed to get away from the craziness of three children, I would say I was going out for a jog, and I would always end up swinging on a swing and just feeling so free up so high...Thank you for bringing back these memories, I am feeling a bit melancholy these past few days.
Peace, Love, and LIght,

Kathy, I still get chance to sample some of these 'childlike' moments when I 'let go', with my boys - it's a prerequisite - thank you for making me realise how precious that is and that I should savour this as well as my own childhood memories. Beautiful! Panda :)

Kathy, I had those kinds of thoughts much of my adult life up until I retired. Now, I wish I could go back to those busy days when I could think, "I wish I had time to do such and such."

Your poem paints a lovely picture of a very pleasant outing that is worthy of your finding the time to do. Happiness can come in such simple pleasures, and I'd love to hear your next poem about your ride on a merry-go-roung. Blessing.

Fresh and rather sweet memories of childhood era. I seldom feel to be a child again and play soccer with children for a while in the streets of Mogadishu. Thanks

Oh Kathy a wonderful breathtaking piece of days being young and carefree. Now young at heart and carefree in the mind is where I like to be to play, be creative and inventive until something called work gets in the way.. Enjoyed this very much...

Be safe,
Karen

Ahhh but there is one on most city blocks just waiting for you to take grandchildren, nieces, nephews and if still shy of one of those local daycares and preschools love to have volunteers to help when they take their groups to the park. The kids can keep us young...even when they tire us out...

Yes, being a kid, as you remind us, is a llot of fun. Everyone MUST do this from time to time. I believe that is why we have kids and grandkids. It is the perfect excuse to be a kid again. Fortunately, for me, I have never really grown-up. My escape is kayaking and mountain hiking - once a month without fail. I have a blast and God and I have a lot of quality time. Sorry Kathy, no remote.
