This is a picture of mama and I. I must have been a few weeks old. Taken in March of 1979.

( It was a sad, gloomy day and it had just rained. I sat in class at my little corner and cried out this song unto a paper--I was thinking about my mom. See, I was a little girl wondering why anyone who'd want to beat my mom, especially the man she loved so much. I was 16 years old when I wrote this and everytime I felt sad, I would 'leave' this world for a while and 'visit' the sea and somehow I felt better...)

Poem Artwork

I want to be
all alone
to be where nobody can see me
I want to be there
in the sea
to see all I love that is flowing around me

I want to be free
free from you
free from the dark
that is turning me blue
free from the world
and the tears
and the man
who is wanting to kill me
to be
be by you
to be by you
only you
and be safe
and to know that you love me

To be free
free from me
free from my fears that are making me fight
free from this name
and the lies
and the guns
and the things they deny me
to live
live for today
to live for today
and the next
through the years
so the future will hold me

(...I did live through that day and the next...through the years and here I am but back then I'd sing this song to myself when I got sad, which was often...and it took me there to the sea, with all that I love flowing around me, funny, I am pisces too, a water sign*smiles*)

Sadly soothing. I understand your yearning for the sea when sad..it is what I yearn for most too when troubled. Your Mother..what a beautiful and regal lady..your story is so moving..your words heart wrenching..Love, Diana.

Benice,
Your Mother is Very Beautiful, You Are Just As Stunning As She Is. I can see you take after her. Even her stature is that of a loving woman. My heart also feels the grief to read your heart in this poetic memory of your teen years. The trauma of seeing such violence I also can relate to as my Mother was also beaten. Domestic Violence hurts in many many ways.
Your Mom Is very Proud Of You!

First... Your mother is beautiful!
Secondly... This poem is just as beautiful. It breathes of the sadness in your heart and has a cathartic melody to it. The words are just as beautiful as the cadence...with soft and soothing words that carry one away...
Thanks for sharing this with us.

So very sad that a man should beat the woman who loves him. As Michael said, you must have been her joy. Though she held you with tears oftentimes, your smile would light up her life and give her courage to go on.
This is a beautiful poem born of heartaches.

Love, Connie

Bernice,

The song does have a soothing effect. It's so sad how the beauty of life covers the reality of it. We are older now and able to make our own decisions. Right or wrong they're ours to make. Peace, Love and Blessings Always, Paul.

...with pain and full notes...ones sings all the waters of emotion within...and a song of the sea...to hold one under...waters of freedom...when the land is found to be barren...and without fluid in the heart...compassion.
wonderful expressive wishes here Bernice...

I love the play with "see" and "sea". It works well--a lot of subliminal sea going on.
A younger member of the den, Lyndsy Young wrote a sea poem that was fabulous. I think that's her name, though I may have spelled it wrong.
Great power-positive song. --Charlie

Some parts of life are the unbearable realities that we see through out the world...it is so sad that even within love and relationships there is that harshness of which when young, it tragicly embeds itself within our hearts....

one can feel the anguish and pain within your thoughts...we can also see that your strength has brought you through this...

nice work Bernice...

The sea - free - and meditating on it's patterned surface of light, wind, waves is a way to the fortress that was that 16 years old's soul. I'm glad you had that - and now you are finding your freedom. And your mother - my lord what a beauty she was - so sad that there is such pain in young relationships of hardship - but her joy that came out of it, was YOU
