TWO MINDS
I spread the glossy brochure wide,
A million dollar home I spied,
The winning ticket’s all I need,
A cheque is then despatched with speed. Now, there you go again my girl,
Your brain is always in a whirl,
Dreaming hopeless dreams of wealth,
Why can‘t you be satisfied with health?
It’s grand! Magnificent! I drool!
Well kept lawns and swimming pool,
A choice of bedrooms, up or down,
Just fifteen minutes into town. Don’t forget that neat lawns grow,
And someone has to trim and mow,
Swimming pools need lots of care,
You’ve money for the rates to spare?
A mansion full of glorious space, You’d soon have it looking a disgrace, I’d regally descend those stairs, And just ignore the dogs on chairs.
A relaxing log fire – that means wood,
Environmentally not good! Majestic ceilings…web festooned,
Would show how much you use a broom.
I anxiously await the day
When the promoters ring me up to say
“You’ve won!” But slowly hope begins to fade,
Someone else has got it made. Now wasn’t that a waste of time,
All those fantasies sublime,
If you’d be realistic for one minute,
You never really thought you’d win it!
Oh… how I wish we could agree,
The positive-negative minds of me,
For surely then we’d make headway,
Besides… another brochure came today.
After I laughed, I realized how profound your beautifully crafted poem is. Our eyes are bigger than our stomachs and we tend to "oversize" and "overspend" to our own detriment.
Thirty-four years ago, I built my dream home, a highly efficient and nature friendly modest home in a beautiful setting without winning the lottery. Unfortunately, my physical condition does not allow me to live in a home with five levels, so I sold the home in 2001 after renting it for 20 years. For the last 15 years or so, I have dreamed about leaving the suburbs for the country, near here and building another dream home that would accommodate much that I need now in retirement. However, as the years pass by my lack of lottery winnings and my will to carry it through is dwindling.
I couldn't help equating the color scheme to Christmas. Maybe that dream you're having will be under the tree from an anonymous benefactor.
