...that much maligned, delicious Christmas Cake.

Poem Artwork

Who took the Fruitcake out of Christmas?

Could it have been those chocolatiers?

Did they get greedy before Valentine’s Day?

Who took the Fruitcake out of Christmas?

Could it have been those tacky comedians,

who poked fun at this delicious display?

For years t’was the gift for best friends and Kings;

For celebrities and kin far off and near.

Shamefully, how we now the Fruitcake do portray.

Soon heard was “Yuck, you got a Fruitcake for Christmas?”

Or “What’d you do to make her/him mad?”

Derogatory remarks that many people would say.

Maybe it was those thoughtless cooks that deemed

any old cake would do if you just add fruits and nuts,

causing the recipients much dismay.

Who took the Fruitcake out of Christmas?

Not me, I love ‘em, but the best I’ve eaten is

from Collin Street Bakery, I’m slicing mine today!!

Mmmmmmmmmm…

(Author’s note: Nope, I don’t have stock in this company, nor do receive compensation for this poem :o)…it’s just that this is the best I’ve ever eaten, and I think Fruitcakes have gotten a bad rap!

I agree, Jackie. If a fruitcake is made right, it is really delicious. I used to make them, and I didn't put the weird funky stuff in it that shows up in the grocery store cakes, that I don't like, but I found that people wouldn't even try it, so I stopped making them. Maybe I will make one for myself next year, just so I can savor the flavor of days gone by. mmmmmm pineapple, cherries, dates, coconut, golden raisins, almonds and pecans all mixed into a spicey honey-rum batter...what's not to like? The fruits used are up to the baker, I am not big on citrus peel so I don't use it. I don't care for mine to be saturated in booze, either, so I would give a fruitcake with a bottle of rum, burbon, kirsch or Gran Mariner. They loved the booze, tossed the cake...go figure. I have even made tropical fruits only, fruitcakes...pineapple, coconut, papaya, mango and macadameas...I am with you on this one, Jackie, "Bring Back The Fruitcake!"

Excellent thoughts! Often miscontrued, seldom appreciated, I had never really thought about it, but I now notice the void. Once they were such a HUGE part of the season, where, oh where, HAVE they gone?
An eloquent piece, my friend

It was Big Businnes Sony Play station III (only $700.00)
and all the other not so toys they brain wash our children with.
But I must say I loved this write
Thank you Micke for sharing it with us

Loved your write, Jackie!! There are bad fruitcakes to be sure, but when they are good, they're the best! Enjoyed your salute to the genre. Merry Christmas and happy holidays to you and yours.

Hello Micke, Being a self confessed fruitcake, i applaud your defence of this essential of all cakes. Love it especially with just a smidgeon of strong cheese. Try it and enjoy christmas.

They have gotten a very bad rap - these poor defenseless fruitcakes.
And you are a true blue warrior with a noble cause, Micke. And now I know where to send any fruitcakes I may find in need of a good home!

In Malta they are still popular (although the Italian pannetone is gaining in popularity). Our fruit cakes are covered with white icing, decorated with colored messages such as Happy Christmas and often a miniatre tree or sledge is stuck in the icing. Very tempting. Victor

The last fruit cake I bought was from Collins Street Bakery and it was delicious. The poor fruit cake has certainly seen better days and is much maligned but not by me I love them.
