Lighted Distress Call

The following poem is based upon an accident that occured two days before Christmas when I was 15 years old. Our water pipes had frozen and in trying to repair the problem, my father and our hired hand (Dave) were badly hurt. To compound the problem, we lived 35 miles from the nearest hospital (12 miles of rough dirt road included)...

This story is also a tribute to my mother and is included in our book, The Gravy Queen.

…A Lighted --- Distress Call…

The night

was gray and full of fog, the need for help

so real

…---…

My world

had crumbled, Dad was hurt and Dave

was barely living

...---…

And so I stood,

beside my brother, to send a lighted

distress call

…---…

And with the light

that blinked short-long-short., my prayers

ascended up above

…---…

“Help them, Father,

to see the light, and come to help us now.

Please rescue us, I pray!”

…---…

And finally

through the foggy night, the sound

of churring blades

…---…

wiped away the quiet tears…
calmed my anguished fears---My silent prayers were answered…

and our lighted call was stilled.

Peace descended on

helicopter wings

giving off its own light

as the life-flight crew appeared.

They said without

our signal lights they couldn’t see

our house

and without

Mom’s living breath, Dave would

have been dead.

They told us

that our mother was a true

and living hero,

but their words

did not surprise me, for I’d known it

all my life.

She’d answered

my distress signals whenever

I had called.

She’d always

been my hero and an answer

to my cries.

"Lighted Distress Call" held my attention all the way through and I was so glad to learn of how the Lord answered all of your prayers that day. Thanks so much for sharing this, Cryssa!! I also learned something from you about your use of color...the light gray made me see the fog, and the ...---... made the distress call even more audible. the yellow made the light visible!!! Very creative use of colors! Excellent poem on so many levels. Heart moving.Praise Jesus!

A beautiful tribute to your mother, Cryssa, and also to your mother's God (and your's) who heard your silent prayers. Your heart of gratitude is a blessing to your friends in the den. Thank you for sharing.

What a traumatic night that must have been, but to have the prayers answered adds to the knowledge that we are watched over. How blessed we are that the memories of our parents stand in testimony to our own security....Jerry

This is such a heart touching story; and even more so since it is true! I can't imagine the fear, the trauma that you and your family experienced on that freezing nite so long ago...and even more than that..I wonder how that event has affected you all these years later...? Thing is...this piece is beautifully done...and...another reason why I loved reading "The Gravy Queen" so much! Your mom was truly a hero..but so are you! hugs, lindalaw

Undone by the beauty, the grace, in these initial moments of terror - reminds me of my Mom, whom we lost 19 years ago (today) - you were blessed, Cryssa, as was I - well done.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
