Touching Heaven

Instinctively,

my arms reach out

to touch a piece of heaven

but realization

halts the thought

and slowly arms withdraw---

In sick hypnotic trance, then,

I stand and watch the scene,

while others clamor forward

for a chance to touch and see;

and numbly my mind races

to thoughts of you and me...

I long to hold you close to me--

            to touch, caress

            and hold

                        Wanting to reach out—

                                    and yet…

Inwardly, I’m searching

for a place for me to hide

instead,

I stand here watching…

while another holds you tight

Unable still, to turn away,

arms hang limply at my side--

aching from their empty load

and wanting what’s not mine…

            That piece of heaven…

                            so close,

                            yet completely out of grasp

The cheerful chatter of the group

wakes me from my trance,

and finally I find strength enough

to turn and walk away--

trying to stem the empty pain

that comes each time you’re near…

When aching arms

reach out to hold…

a tiny bit of heaven.

That third stanza with the "searching for a place to hide" somehow touches me the most although the entire poem is a vivid illustration of irrepressible longing. I feel for you, Cryssa. Isn't it fortunate to have an outlet like poetry when we cry out to God?.......Jerry

When aching arms
reach out to hold…
a tiny bit of heaven.

...so close and yet so unattainable. This theme is very common in this world/life. Thank you, Cryssa. Love and best wishes,

Regis

The aching, the loss, expressed in this poem could only be imagined by a heart that has experienced its depths, Cryssa. Thank you for opening your heart to us and sharing the beauty of authentic creativity.

Beautifully realised, Cryssa, and, as others have said, wonderful in its open-ended interpretation. All of us can relate in some shape or form and on many levels of longing that is both physical and metaphysical. A very telling line, though, "wanting what's not mine" - therein lies the crux! Very felt. TY Kate xx PS Always love how you review my work, Cryssa! Love your upfront honesty and careful analysis of personal impact. :)) xx

There is so much hope and longing, so much pain and disillusion too.
These words could be about relationships, family or spirituality,
I feel that they are open to interpretation.

Painful but inescapable feelings - wanting to embrace and let go, longing for a touch but withdrawing for fear of more pain...so
true of women.
