This day will live in infamy

In Jesus Christ Amen!

One Sunday many years ago we took a dear little girl to worship.
She lived with a drunken father who cursed quite a bit.
My mother was like her Nanny but also her rock & shield.
Teaching of the love of Jesus, in her heart Mother sealed.

Driving to the church that Sunday, we told her she can’t swear,
Especially not in God’s House for it is sacred there.
She promised us she’d be good and crossed her little heart.
I had a sense of untold dread, which gave me such a start.

I tried not to worry about it for she was such a sweet child.
All thoughts left me, of her leaving the church totally defiled.
So I took her hand and walked with her down the isle where we sat.
I told her we must be very quiet, no place for idle chit chat.

So she quietly she sat there as we all stood in prayer.
She folded her little hands and looked like an angel standing there.
The preacher was just finishing and said “In Jesus Christ Amen.”
This dear little girl jumped up and I felt that dread again.

“If I can’t say a bad word then neither can he, it just isn’t fair,”
Were the words she cried out, as we shriveled & died there.

Your poems always lift my spirits and help me to be able to laugh at my own children's antics.

I hope the little girl at least had a shirt on! Great picture you chose!
This is a wonderful story--it's funny, but sad, too, and oh, so embarassing for you that day! I'm sure everyone around you was chuckling.
Bill and I used to do bus ministry at Grace Chapel, and had a lot of kids who knew nothing about church, so we had some very memorable times, too. "Jesus loves the little children of the world!"

Oh, Bonnie, Your way with children is superb. And you do care for them, the ones all around the world and mostly I know you love your Grandchildren dearly and hope you have a nice time with them on your vacation. Hug them dearly.
