What in the World is Steak?

I never knew what a steak was as a child. It was many years later when I found out how delicious they were.

What in the World is Steak?

What in the world is steak? I’ve never heard of such a thing.
Our meat was cooked long and hard until it would zing.
Leftovers would be made into totally different meals,
Like veggie soup or pot pie for our tummy’s to fill.

One piece of meat for one person was unheard of.
We shared everything, out of necessity and love.
The day I ate my first steak, I can remember it well.
I felt so guilty but it tasted pleasingly swell.

I kept thinking I should save a small part.
To put in my soup later for a grand old start.
But I never in my life tasted something so good.
And wasn’t about to leave a drop, even if I could.

I wondered if my Mother ever heard of a steak,
One you seared on a grill, only minutes it takes.
I can’t believe she did for meat had to be well charred,
Cooked forever in a pot until absolutely marred.

I still feel a little guilty when I put a steak on the grill.
Remembering how many tummy’s one piece of meat had to fill.

Make mine a 2" prime rib or tenderloin, depending on my appetite...and with nothing more than salt/pepper/garlic rub, cooked med-rare to rare. That's my treat to myself once every 6 months or so; much chicken and veggies in between :o) Hey, my Doc tells me I need more red meat after blood-work reports!
Bonnie, girl...you started somethin' with this poem, and have my mouth salivating!!!

almost nothing better... I am always grateful that due to living on a dairy farm, we had plenty of steak growing up. Sadly... I don't know that my children quite understand what steak is... TOO expensive for our household at this point!! hee, hee...

A steak my dear Bonnie are , a 3" T-bone piece of meat which will be BBQed over oak coal and smoked with, using a big plate because here comes grilled halved tomatoes with salt-pepper-olive oil-oregano, grilled red paprika filled with mushrooms topped with cream cheese, and a good chilled rosé whine (Matheus? Asti? Riesling?) eat until the waist belt cries uncle!
That, my dear Bonnie...is a steak!

Dear Bonnie,

I know what you mean by it all. I never hardly eat steak now, one because of cost and two because I cannot chew so easily in my old age. But is is a delicious piece of meat for me to enjoy at a restaurant or sometimes on a holiday. Thanks for this tasty dish of a poem. Lois
