So you don't worry too much, there were only 8 homes in the development and no through traffic. But I was terrified the same.

No Promise!

Very early one morning the telephone rang,
It was about five a.m., and it was our neighbor Stan.
“Bonnie, do you know where Tommy is?” was the question he had asked.
Tommy was my three year old, who was the youngest and our last.

“Stan, have you been drinking?” was my quick reply.
“Tommy’s been sleeping for hours now, so I will say goodbye.”
“Not so quick, don’t hang up, just look out your door.”
“Tommy’s been riding his GO, GO cycle, at least since four”

I thought that Stan went crazy but I ran to Tommy’s room.
Sure enough he was gone and I felt an awful doom.
I hung up the telephone and out the door I flew.
For I knew Stan was right, it was something that I knew.

There he was a zoomin up and down the street.
Making zoom, zoom noises and kicking up his feet.
Oh, what a blast my son was having with no one else around.
Up and down the street he went, still making zoom, zoom sounds.

I didn’t want to wake the neighbors but a shout came out the same.
“Tommy, Tommy get over here,” for I screamed out his name.
I stunned the little guy so much he almost crashed his bike.
He came to me so sheepishly, I felt sorry for the tiny tike.

“Oh, mommy you scared me, why did you yell at me?
“Because you scared me too, is this where you’re to be?”
“You should be in bed my son, not out on the street.”
“Don’t you ever scare me like that again, or your hinny I will beat.”

“But Mom, I like to ride and I was having so much fun,”
I knew right then and there,
I was getting no promise from my son.

Why those moments were not longer? the worries and the relief!
Today we know they are safe, chained forever to that TV...

We looked out our window early one morning and we too saw our little neighbor girl Sharon coming down the street in just her nightgown. Back in 1970' and now that little girl has 2 girls of her own. We phoned her Mother and she did not know Sharon has gone out the house.

I'd bet he inherited his adventurous ways from his Mom :o) What a fun read, as long as the story had a happy ending!!
