I wish all of you could have met Gibby. We loved him so much.

What a Bird!

Gibby, Gibby, Gibby, what a funny, funny bird.
He did so many hilarious things, some most absurd.
We found him when he was just a little baby crow.
Our hearts opened to him, we loved this crow so.

We didn’t want him completely tame so we kept him in a tree.
We would feed and play with him, and neighbors came to see.
He would visit the neighbors and spend some time with them.
But he always came back to us, time and time again.

Our one neighbor taught him to get worms out of his worm box.
It involved a close pin lock which Gibby loved a lot.
So one day, our other neighbor Pat, was hanging up her clothes.
Gibby hurriedly picked the pins out and picked at Pat’s toes.

She always wanted Gibby there to show him off to her friends.
But that was where Gibby and Pat’s friendship truly ends.
What a funny bird and what joy to us he brought.
To those that knew him and loved him quite a lot.

My favorite thing was sunbathing with him by our pool.
Me on my solar blanket him on his, acting like a fool.
He’d spread his wings out wide and cock his little head.
His little tongue hung out and he almost looked quite dead.

When my husband came from work, Gibby would leave his brothers.
He would fly like a wild bird and sit upon Jim’s shoulders.
Everywhere my husband went, Gibby was right there.
Everyone around them could only laugh and stare.

One day Jim was feeding Gibby and gave him venison.
Gibby kept taking more & more, giving his brothers some.
When we moved very faraway, we brought Gibby too.
We couldn’t leave him behind, our friendship was true blue.

As we were moving in Gibby got scared and flew away.
We never saw our dear Gibby again, not since that awful day.
Many months later, our old neighbor called to say.
“All my worms are disappearing”, I noticed yesterday.

I have a cheeky kind of Gibby around here, a thief that takes away anything that shines, glass marbles, glassy flower pot decorations, nails, screws even a little screwdriver forgotten in the veranda floor after some repairs. Funny? more like Houdini doing all kind of disappearing acts...

Loved this write my friend! Guess what? Today after working in the garden I sat down beneath a tree to rest in the shade, and prop my foot up for a minute when suddenly a small blue jay fell out of the tree onto the ground. I carefully picked it up and walked it next door to my granddaughter's house...they put the little bird in a cage fed it a worm and watched it enjoy it's supper. She's going to keep it caged until it is ready to fly...can't leave it on the ground as we have...hmmm, I've lost count just how many cats are on our farm now! Loved the poetic tale of Gibby...it's amazing how God's creatures can steal our hearts away! Enjoyed!
Blessings,
Joyce B.

Wonderfully written Bonnie! I had a similar experience and was told that wild birds will not leave the area they are familiar with. since Gibby didn't live in your home it makes a difference. I loved reading this...
