When I was very young

And lying in my bed.

The morning train whistle blew

Each time it passed our shed.

I said many times to myself

There will come a day.

When I will get on that train

And wander far away.

Well it took me awhile

Thirteen more years or so

Before the conductor took my ticket

And the whistle began to blow.

This happened many decades past

On my way to the Army base.

The sound of that whistle is still on my mind

A sound that time can never erase.
