5am
remote in hand
doing the insomniac shuffle
thru endless cable stations
whoa MTV2
there’s John Mayer
telling me there is no such thing
as the real world
it’s just a lie we have to rise above
blue funk
damned if I haven’t spent half my life
trying to understand the real world
trying to fit in
trying to adapt to what is real
and it was all a lie
before I become suicidal at this news
I glance back at the screen
And there is John Mayer
25 years old and pretty as a picture
raking in millions
for singing to a world of teenage girls
what the hell does he know
about the real world
In disgust
I flip back the the millionth rerun
Of I Love Lucy
Now this is the real world
