Poem Artwork

I'd walk by the children
As they worked on their test
Slowing down a little
As I neared Sara Lynn's desk
She'd hide her little face
And pull at her sweater
Trying to cover the bruises
Just a little bit better
I touched her tiny shoulder
Not knowing what to say
As I simply smiled at Sara Lynn
And slowly turned away

She never played at recess
She always sit alone
Watching the other children
In a world all her own
Even in the heat of day
Her sweater was her best friend
Hiding the bruises on her arm
Masking the terror within
I'd see the pain on her face
As she watched the others play
As I simply smiled at Sara Lynn
And slowly turned away

One day her desk was empty
Sara Lynn wasn't there
The morning paper had the new's
She had no one to care
Her daddy beat her that nite
Little Sara Lynn was gone
Crying and bleeding on her bed
She died there all alone
I stared at her empty desk
With tearfilled eyes that day
Could I have saved her little life
If I hadn't turned away

Linda You have presented us with a definitive view into a worldwide problem, and done so quite succinctly. A well thought out work that tells it all. I weep for the little ones, the ones that i have seen and those that are unknown.
Well done.

As to fixing the problem socially, ther is no money in promoting childrens protection Agencies worldwide are understaffed, underpayed, and under financed, and most cases do not come to the attention of the Authoriies, until medical attention is needed. Why? because Doctors are required by Law to report suspicious injuries to Police, and Welfare Agencies. In Australia, Teachers do have that resposibility where a child's behaviour creates the suspicion of any form of abuse or neglect.

Its hard to know what to do. I have reported a few cases and each case was dismissed because of lack of other witness's. How many do they need? In one cases the bruises were on the body........but mommy said, "She's trips a lot....." I know I am not the only one tearing out my hair over this stupidity.

Powerful and tearful also this write. Hopefully one day child abuse will be thing of the past as to me there is nothing worse than a human abusing a child. If you can call them a real human.
Thank you for sharing this here

This is an absolute heart-wrenching write!!! It just rips my very core knowing that this goes on across the globe, and it must be STOPPED!!! You have once again caused tears to fall but they are for knowing, there are still wonderful human beings left on this planet, who truly care!!! Because of your tender and caring soul, Poet Linda Hill, there still may be some hope left in this world for the abused children. Are you still working on that book? I know you can do it!!!

I think anyone who wants kids should pass IQ and EQ tests at the least.

This is just going so bad...

Linda,
Anytime a small child
is abused or hurt it is
painful and the trust they
hang on to just to be loved
is so harmful.

Powerful poem Lady Linda...

Some things just take our hearts away.
Each of us needs to keep our eyes open, and our mouths if necessary.
Silence is not golden.
You are an angel Linda Hill.

Oh Linda, BRAVA! Excellent piece!
It explains the details of what most
any teacher or parent/friend goes through
when they hears the "News". Now, if only
they had done something? Remember though, we cannot all do something
for every child that comes through the door broken hearted and physically/mentally or sexually abused. I wish you peace Linda, whether or not this was fictional or real.

We are both haunted by the "boogeyman". You have put him to rest, he still haunts the halls with me.

Thanks so much Linda.

This pulls at your gut for revenge. But we are supposed to be a civilized society. Tell that to the Sara Lynn's of the world. Great heart moving write so well written.

Truly heartbreaking poem, Linda.

I guess it's nearly impossible to save every one of these terribly abused children in the world; but it truly is through the magnificent efforts by you and other extremely dedicated folks that maybe there is hope.
