I'd walk by the children
As they worked on their test
Slowing down a little
As I neared Sara Lynn's desk
She'd hide her little face
And pull at her sweater
Trying to cover the bruises
Just a little bit better
I touched her tiny shoulder
Not knowing what to say
As I simply smiled at Sara Lynn
And slowly turned away
She never played at recess
She always sit alone
Watching the other children
In a world all her own
Even in the heat of day
Her sweater was her best friend
Hiding the bruises on her arm
Masking the terror within
I'd see the pain on her face
As she watched the others play
As I simply smiled at Sara Lynn
And slowly turned away
One day her desk was empty
Sara Lynn wasn't there
The morning paper had the new's
She had no one to care
Her daddy beat her that nite
Little Sara Lynn was gone
Crying and bleeding on her bed
She died there all alone
I stared at her empty desk
With tearfilled eyes that day
Could I have saved her little life
If I hadn't turned away
Nice picture, I had a desk like that with the inkwell in the center. Very frustrating when you are left handed. Wish more people would take an active interest in the well being of all children. Many adults are just plain afraid to step up to the plate for fear they may be prosecuted and so the children continue to suffer....
Sometimes the decisions that we make seem like they're for the best. Hindsight is always the test. Child abuse should be reported, even if it's only suspected. Sad poem with an even sadder ending.
So sad that this still goes on in this day and age...there should have to be physchatric evaluation of prospective parents, although this seems extreme...if it saves the live of just one child than it would be worth it...maybe it could be done as part of the marraige prep I don't know but just an idea,
Be safe,
